Fiat 500X Power of X Tour with Dynamo

Fiat 500 Power of X Tour with Dynamo

Fiat kicked off the Fiat 500X pre-launch phase by teaming up with the famous British magician Dynamo to produce "The Power of X" tour - a virtual reality magic experience that will introduce people to the Fiat 500X at 602 dealership events and venues located in 74 European cities. In addition to the entertainment, participants will be invited to explore the 500X both inside and out, plus be driven in the car by professional drivers.

Earlier this week, the "Power of X" tour made its UK debut in London with a performance by Dynamo at an arena filled with 1,000 invited guests. The show created by Dynamo was the result of three year's work and preparation. During the highlight of the illusion, Dynamo brings to life a 3-dimensional blueprint of the Fiat 500X in front of the mesmerized audience.

These UK venues mark the end of the "Power of X" tour as well as the official start of the vehicle being available in Europe. The Fiat 500X made its debut in Italian showrooms last weekend, recording a record turnout with more than 70,000 visitors and more than 12,900 test drives. Order books have opened and there have been more than 71,000 people who have signed up for additional information. The Fiat 500X will arrive in UK showrooms April 17, 2015. Prices will start at £14,595 OTR.*

Fiat 500X and Dynamo

The Fiat 500X is expected to reach the United States sometime this Spring. Pricing may be announced this February and, according to sources, the cars will offer a lot of equipment for the money. Not entry level, but will represent the excellent value that Fiats are noted for.

Fiat 500 Sets World Record!

Alastair Moffatt and Fiat 500C

How agile is the Fiat 500? Nimble enough to set a Guinness World Record for the Tightest Parallel Park that's how! Renowned Stunt Driver Alastair Moffatt demonstrated the maneuverability of the Fiat 500 by spinning the car into a parking space with just 3 inches (7.5cm) to spare!

Using a stock UK spec Fiat 500C Cabrio, Muffet drove up to the parking space at speed from the opposite direction and turned into the space while yanking the parking brake handle, executing a perfect parallel park job.

The Fiat 500 Cult used was equipped with the standard 1.2 L engine and had its ESC (Electronic Stability Control System) disabled so the car could be spun making a handbrake turn. Tire pressure was also adjusted to suit the stadium's road surface and a steering wheel knob added to facilitate one hand operation.

Driving a standard FIAT 500C 1.2 Cult, Moffatt managed to park in a spot just 7.5cm longer overall than the vehicle.

Moffatt, a Master Instructor at Stunt Drive UK, previously set the Guinness World Record for the Tightest Parallel Park at 3.39 inches (8.6cm). Moffatt also has records for Tightest Double Parallel Park and Tightest Triple Parallel Park. This new record was set during the Performance Car Show at the 2015 Autosport International Racing Car Show held January 8-11, at the National Exhibition Center (NEC)in Birmingham, England.

Fiat 500 World Record Parking Job

Moffatt is quoted saying, "It's wonderful to have my record back! With the gap getting ever smaller, finding the right vehicle is increasingly important, so the light weight, agility, dimensions and parking-friendly shape of the FIAT 500 makes it perfect to getting into even the tightest parking spots."

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider World Premier

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider

The Alfa Romeo 4c Spider made its world premier at the Detroit Auto Show Monday. The production version of the Alfa Romeo 4c Spider looks nearly indistinguishable from the 4c Spider Concept car that was previewed at the Geneva Motor Show in March of last year.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Top Down

Hand made at the Maserati factory in Modena, Italy, the 4C is constructed largely out of exotic materials typically reserved for cars that cost well over six figures. As with most convertible open top cars, there is a weight gain as the chassis needs additional reinforcement to make up for the loss of rigidity when a roof is cut off. Fortunately, because of the Alfa Romeo 4C's immensely strong carbon fiber chassis, the weight gain on the 4C Spider has been kept to an astonishing 22 lbs in North American cars.

2,465 lbs (1,118 kg) – 4C Coupe
2,487 lbs (1,128 kg) – 4C Spider

Like the coupe version, the 4C Spider was designed by FGA Centro Stile in Torino and uses the legendary Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale as its design inspiration. The production version of the 4C Spider remains true to the 4C Concept car looks. The main differences being the US spec bumperettes in the rear and the drivers side lower air intake that was added to all North American 4c models. This new air intake is for the Alfa TCT (Twin Clutch Transmission) and improves the 4C's track performance at high ambient temperatures.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Targa Bar

Aerodynamically, the 4C Spider's body shape offers the same downforce as the coupe version, which is important for high speed stability and special attention was paid to minimize cockpit wind buffering for passenger comfort. Coefficient of drag for the 4C Spider is 0.341 versus 0.335 for the 4C Coupe.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is a targa roof design and uses a carbon fiber windshield frame and a stowable cloth top or exposed carbon fiber hardtop to protect the exposed cabin. At the rear roof mounting, a black or optional carbon fiber "halo" covers the rear rollover bar.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is available in seven exterior colors and includes: Rosso Alfa, Black, White, Basalt Grey Metallic, Rosso Competizione Tri-coat, Madreperla White Tri-coat and all-new Giallo (yellow).

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Interior

Interior
Sport seats made from carbon fiber and fiberglass reinforced-composite are upholstered in leather. Standard in the 4C Spider is the fully wrapped premium-leather interior package with accent stitching and unique carbon fiber vent surrounds.

Interiors come in 6 combinations and two seat material choices: Black leather with Red accent stitching, Red leather with Red accent stitching, new Black leather with Giallo accent stitching, and exclusive to the Track Package - Black racing leather seats with microfiber inserts and Red or Yellow accent stitching.

New to the 4C model lineup will be a contrasting Tobacco leather with Black accent interior available later in the model year. This will also feature the dual color treatment on the instrument, door panels, and steering wheel.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Stereo

An Alpine premium stereo is now available in all models and offers premium sound quality and multiple connectivity and media options, including handsfree Bluetooth phone, Bluetooth streaming, USB port, iPod interface, and CD/MP3 capabilities. In addition, the Alpine radio provides access to HD radio and SiriusXM Radio for high-definition broadcast audio.

Four new wheel designs will be offered including staggered fitting 17 x 7.0-inch (front) and 18 x 8.0-inch (rear) alloy wheels in Silver or Dark finish. Larger 18 x 7.0-inch (front) and wider 19 x 8.5-inch (rear) forged wheels in Silver or Dark Gray finish are also available. Brake caliper color choices include the standard Silver or available Red, Yellow, or Black.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider 1750 TBi

Engine
The engine of the Alfa Romeo 4C is a new aluminum block evolution of the powerful 1750 TBi (Turbo Benzina Injection) engine used in the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde. This beast of an engine has performance characteristics said to rival that of a 3 liter. The 1750 Turbo engine boasts direct fuel injection, dual continuous variable valve timing, a high-efficiency turbocharger, and a revolutionary pulse-converter scavenging system that boost torque at low-engine speeds and eliminates turbo lag. Intake and exhaust manifolds have been optimized for the 4C's mid-engine application. Power is rated at 237 hp (177 kW) at 6,000 rpm on a maximum turbo boost pressure of 21.75 psi (1.45 bar). The 1750 TBi has a torque rating of 258 lb.-ft. (350 Nn) at 2,200 - 4,250 rpm. A full 80% of engine torque is available at just 1,700 rpm, and the engine has the highest specific output ever recorded by an Alfa Romeo production engine (136 bhp/liter).

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider in Italy

With an outstanding power to weight ratio of 10.49 lbs./horsepower (4.7 kg/horsepower), acceleration from 0 - 60 mph is 4.1 seconds, which is quicker than a Porsche 911. Top speed is 160 mph.

Transmission
The 1750 TBi engine is teamed with the Alfa TCT (Twin Clutch Transmission) 6-speed dual dry clutch transmission. The Alfa TCT allows gears to be changed in sequential mode using the shift paddles located behind the steering wheel. The transmission works like two gearboxes in parallel, each with its own clutch. The next gear is selected while the previous gear is still engaged, producing lightning fast shifts and eliminating any interruption in power delivery. When cornering, sophisticated programming allows the Alfa TCT to complete shifts in the smoothest way possible to avoid reducing stability.

How quick can the Alfa Romeo 4C TCT shift? Try 130 milliseconds in Race mode at full throttle!

In Dynamic, Natural or All-weather modes, the transmission may also be allowed to shift itself automatically if desired.

Alfa 4C DNA Selector

Alfa DNA
The Alfa DNA selector allows drivers to choose from four settings depending on his or her mood and road requirements. This effects how the car drives and performance and stability control levels.

  • All-weather – designed to ensure maximum control under adverse weather conditions, this mode enables the Alfa Romeo 4C to respond gently to accelerator input. The anti-slip regulation (ASR) system selects special engine and brake control logic and, in the event of loss of grip, modifies power to prevent skidding or loss of traction.
  • Natural – this mode enables the 4C to delivers comfort and smooth drivability. The Alfa TCT gearbox utilizes an “auto-up” function when engine speed approaches the rev limiter. The Alfa Electronic Q2 differential operates more passively, only engaging if one of the rear wheels loses grip
  • Dynamic – in this mode, the 4C provides the driver with improved driving performance. A more aggressive powertrain calibration enables the engine to be more responsive, while the Alfa TCT gearbox delivers 25 percent quicker gear changes. Additionally, the electronic stability control (ESC) system is less intrusive, enabling the driver more lateral drift before intervening
  • Race – is the most extreme performance mode, putting the driver in total control of the car under race conditions. ESC is deactivated and only intervenes to prevent loss of control during fierce braking. ASR is also deactivated, allowing the driver to control traction through the accelerator pedal. Alfa Electronic Q2 differential control system remains active for fast exits out of corners or bends

The Alfa Romeo 4C is also fitted with Launch Control for easy high performance standing starts. You activate Launch Control by pressing the brake pedal while pushing the accelerator pedal all the way down and squeezing the paddle on the left of the steering wheel. As soon as you release the brake, the system automatically controls the gearbox, traction and power to maximize acceleration.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Rear

Exhaust
Originally shown on the 4C Spider Concept, the production 4C Spider will offer a hard-core performance enthusiast Akrapovič dual-mode exhaust system. This titanium exhaust system consists of two center-mounted tailpipes, computer-optimized asymmetrical mufflers with a dual-mode exhaust valve cut-out and link pipe with resonator to eliminate in-cabin droning. A carbon fiber bezel surrounds the Akrapovič center-mounted exhaust tips.

Alfa Romeo 4C Akrapovič Exhaust System

As with the 4C Coupe, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider will also offer the standard exhaust system and a racing exhaust system. The optional racing exhaust removes the muffler and replaces it with a free flowing Y-pipe after the catalyst. Dual concentric exhaust tips finish off the racing system.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Side

Suspension
The Alfa Romeo 4C front suspension is a double-wishbone design. High-strength steel tubular-control arms, aluminum knuckles, and tubular anti-roll bar are teamed with manual rack and pinion steering for precise handling. Rear suspension consists of MacPherson struts manufactured with hollow piston rods and side-load spring. High-strength steel tubular-control arms, aluminum knuckles and an anti-roll bar round out the system.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider

Track Package
The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is available with the Track Package that includes high-performance shock absorbers with larger front- and rear-sway bars, larger and staggered fitting 18 x 7-inch (front) 19 x 8.5-inch (rear) forged-aluminum wheels with available Pirelli P-Zero "AR Racing" tires. The Track Package is visually identified by a performance flat-bottom steering wheel with microfiber inserts, carbon fiber exterior mirrors and carbon fiber gauge cluster bezel, plus the availability of Black leather performance seats with microfiber inserts and Red or Yellow accent stitching.

Availability
Look for the 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider to arrive at showrooms this summer!

2016 Fiat 500 Spied!

Click for larger image

First spy shots of the refreshed 2016 Fiat 500 have shown up on the Italian website Quattroruote. The outside images show a car that remains very much like the current 500, except for heavily disguised front and rear bumper fascias. It is hard to tell what is underneath the camouflage, but shape outlines coming through the covers show a possible subtle reshaping of the bumpers. Keen-eyed Italian photographer/journalist Claudio Giusto brings up the possibility that they could match up to an image Fiat printed in their 5-year business plan published on May last year.

2016 Fiat 500
Notice the subtle changes to the grille opening and bumper shape including a character line under the European highbeam headlight / US daytime running light.

As for the interior, the 2016 Fiat 500 spy shot shows the navigation unit being integrated into the dashboard in contrast to the add-on Tom Tom unit that was mounted on top of the dashboard on current 500 models. The new 2016 Fiat 500 also shows the updated power window switches used in the NAFTA 500 and possibly a revised steering wheel.

This confirms what sources have told us that the refreshed 500 is getting an interior makeover incorporating some of the North American 500 updates. The integrated Nav unit will be most welcome to 500 owners as it has been cited as one of the most asked for updates. The new unit looks similar to the design used in the Fiat 500X. Along with the new design, it looks like Fiat is finally making the switch from Tom Tom to the award winning Uconnect system.

Fiat 500X Navigation Unit
Fiat 500X Navigation

When we will see the refreshed 2016 Fiat 500 is open to speculation; however, July 4th is the 58th anniversary of the introduction of the 1957 Fiat 500, so mark that as a possibility. Those looking for the next generation Fiat 500 will have to wait a few more years until after 2017. Sources say don't be surprised if the 2018 Fiat 500 is wider and maybe just a tad longer, but will still look unmistakably like a 500.

Fiat Sales for 2014 Best Ever

Fiat 500 Picnic

The sales totals are in and 2014 was a record year for the Fiat Brand. Fiat sold a total of 46,121 cars in the United States in 2014, up 7 percent compared to 2013, making it the best year since the brand came back to the North American market in 2011. When you factor in Canada and Mexico, Fiat brand sales for North America total 58,777.* This beats the previous record of 55,600 units achieved in 2012.

Model breakdown in the US shows that there was a total of 33,708 Fiat 500 hatchback, Cabrios and Abarth sold in 2014. This is down 6 percent compared to 2013's figure of 35,834 cars.

Fiat 500L Urbana

Total sales of the Fiat 500L for 2014 reached 12,413, up from 7,402 from the previous year. Sales of the Fiat 500L were impacted by a recall that sidelined roomy MPV for nearly two months. The Fiat 500L is the best-selling vehicle in its segment in Europe but has not made as big a splash here in the North American market. Upcoming changes for 500L in 2015 - reshaped front seats, revised suspension calibrations, and a new, conventional automatic transmission - look to fix that.

As for the month of December, the Fiat brand recorded its best December sales ever. This was helped by the 500L breaking its all times monthly sales record. Fiat 500L December sales were up 4 percent compared to same month last year and 31 percent compared to November 2014.

With the introduction of the new Fiat 500X crossover set to hit Fiat showrooms in the first have of the year, 2015 is shaping up to be the best year yet!

2014 Highlights

FiatSpA Stock Certificate
In October, Fiat SPA stock certificates were traded in for newly issued Fiat Chrysler Automobile stock. Fiat was founded in 1899 as the Fabrica Italiana di Automobili Torino or F.I.A.T. and remained that until 1918, when it was was reorganized and incorporated as Fiat SpA.**

New Beginnings
Fiat total acquisition of Chrysler was finalized earlier in the year. The company that was known to the world as Fiat SpA since 1918 changed its name to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to reflect the company's global partnership and to also honor the Chrysler legacy.

Recalls
Recalls were widespread thru out the auto industry in 2014 and Fiat was not immune. Supplier's manufacturing problems, first with the transmission gear shift module and then with one of the driver's side airbags, hit the 500L. The 500e also suffered a recall, this time to update the Power Inverter Module in approximately 19 cars.

Fiat 500 1957 Edition

New Models
Fiat introduced the popular Fiat 500 1957 Edition and expanded sales of what was the California only Fiat 500e all-electric model to the state of Oregon.

Fiat 500 Abarth Digital Instrument Panel

The 2014 model year was a short one for 500 hatchback, Cabrio, and Abarth models. Instead, Fiat unveiled the 2015 Fiat 500 early in April at the 2015 New York Auto Show. The new, updated 500 features several enhancements including a revised center console, Bluetooth streaming audio and a digital TFT display instrument cluster.

Also for the first time in 500 Turbo and 500 Abarth models, an automatic transmission is offered. The heavy duty automatic transmission has been extensively tuned for high-performance use by Abarth engineers and has been impressing enthusiasts with its sporty nature.

Alfa Romeo 4C at the New York Auto Show

The much anticipated Alfa Romeo 4C also made its North American debut at the New York Auto Show and had Alfa enthusiasts salivating while waiting for the cars to show up later in the year at newly anointed Alfa Romeo dealers.

2016 Fiat 500X Trekking Plus

After a gestation period of more than three years, the Fiat 500X crossover finally debuted at the Paris Motor Show in October. It was quickly followed up by its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. This new, exciting model has quickly become one of the most talked about CUVs in its segment. Deliveries of the Fiat 500X in Europe are said to begin during the first quarter of the year, with North American deliveries starting afterward. Sometime during mid to late Spring is the best ETA so far. We may get a price during the next few weeks.
