Fiat USA has announced the new 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Urbana Edition will makes its public debut next week at the New York Auto Show. Coincidentally, this news comes nearly one year to the day that this website broke the news that there will be an Urbana edition of the Spider. Urbana is Italian for Urban, and the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Urbana Edition features special trim that gives the car a sporty urban, sophisticated look.

Fiat 124 Spider Urbana Coming!

The 124 Spider Urbana Edition is based on the entry level Classica model, but adds premium trim and items not normally available on the base model.

The Fiat 124 Spider Urbana Edition special trim includes:

• Black Diamond 17-inch aluminum wheels with performance tires replaces 16-inch wheels in Silver
• Dual bright exhaust tips
• Matte Gray interior accents replacing the standard brushed aluminum accents
• Urbana leather/microfiber seats with Red accent stitching replaces cloth seats

• Piano (Gloss) Black exterior accents listed below:

Just in time for the spring convertible season, the FIAT brand announced today the new 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Urbana Edition.

2020 Fiat 124 Spider Model Year Changes

Information from our sources about the 2020 Fiat 124 Spider has begun to trickle in, and preliminary news shows the 2020 Spider will be much like the 2019 model, and available in three versions – Classica, Lusso, and Abarth. Changes for 2020 include a new Technology Plus II option package for Classica models and the elimination of the Magnetico Bronze Metallic color. Back for 2020 are the Urbana and Veleno edition introduced in the 2019 model year as well as the striping packages that debuted that year.

Mechanical
The document we've seen on the 2020 Fiat Spider lists the veteran 1.4L MultiAir Turbo engine as the sole engine choice. The powerful MultiAir Turbo won the 2012 Best New Engine Award in the annual International Engine of the Year Awards competition and is used in all Fiats sold in the US, except for the new 500X. That model is using the newly introduced 1.3L FireFly engine series which is favored to eventually replace the MultiAir engine in all models. The FireFly Turbo has the potential for more power, but so far, there is no word on that happening with the Spider. Naturally, we will report back if we hear any news.

Colors
The 2020 Fiat 124 Spider is available in eight colors, down from the nine offered last year. The Magnetico Bronze Metallic color (previously known as Bronzo Magnetico or Titanium, color code PDF) has been dropped for 2020.

This is all preliminary information which is subject to change.  However, it is a good sign for those who were thinking 2019 would be the last year of the Spider.  There is a long lead time once a dealer places an order - typically nine months plus - and as of now the order books aren't open, so we don't anticipate seeing the 2020 Spider until later this year at the soonest.  We will keep you updated when we hear anything.

Confirmed: Abarth Steering Wheel Badge Coming!

Fiat500USA.com has confirmed the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth will come with Abarth badging on its steering wheel and seatbacks embroidered with the Abarth name.

Note:the above pictures are of the European Abarth 124 Spider. Images of the US version are not available, but are anticipated to look similar.

When the Abarth version of the Fiat 124 Spider was first announced in March 2016, the car was initially badged as the Fiat 124 Spider with an Elaborazione Abarth emblem on the side. The name Elaborazione Abarth is loosely translated to Tuned by Abarth meaning that the car had an Abarth option package.

Condensing their views, this author put together a letter to some key players in the company petitioning for the new car to have more power and the car be badged as an Abarth. The Fiat USA listened to their fan base and out went the Elaborazione badge and Fiat emblems and in came the full Abarth branding including the added horsepower of the European car.

We dropped a hint here that change was coming...

An interesting bit of trivia is Fiat USA had to seek approval from Abarth & Co. to call the car an Abarth. Sources say it was not just a straightforward name change and required some negotiations. In Europe, the Abarth brand is a separate division from Fiat and is run with different leadership with their own objectives.

One sticking point was the Abarth logos for the interior. Changing the steering wheel badging was not as simple as slapping a badge on and calling it done as the badge is attached to the airbag cover. That would mean recertifying the airbag system which would take at least one year to complete. The embroidered Abarth logo on the seats (which also contain airbags) faced a similar delay. Fiat Spider Record Monza Exhaust Coming!

Fiat enthusiasts will be happy to hear the long awaited Record Monza exhaust system upgrade for the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is on its way! This special exhaust upgrade features a Dual Mode Muffler that has a valve that bypasses the muffler depending on engine load. Its name honors Carlo Abarth's speed record he personally set at the Monza race track in 1965.

We received insider information that dealer orders for the Abarth Record Monza Exhaust will open as a 'factory' upfit (Abarth only) beginning next month and will also be available over the counter by late April. Cars ordered with a Record Monza will have the exhaust system hand fitted when the car arrives in the US, just like the Abarth Racing Heritage stripe.  European Abarth Spiders feature this same hand fitting when arriving in Europe.

The initial batch of cars fitted with the exhaust will come with a limited edition Abarth fender badge to commemorate the launch, celebrating the first US Fiats available with a ‘factory’ exhaust upgrade option. From what we heard, upfit pricing will be right around $995 with the over the counter version coming in around $895.



The Abarth Record Monza features a muffler bypass that activates depending on engine load. Typically anything over 3000 rpm will be in bypass mode and sounds awesome.

The Record Monza is a direct bolt-on for Abarths, but requires a little lower fascia trimming to fit on the Classica and Lussos models (a template is included with the instructions).

2018 Fiat 124 Spider Updates

Readers of Fiat 500 USA Blog will remember that in February we published details on the new 2018 Fiat 124 Spider. Today Fiat USA has officially announced the 2018 124 Spider. Details are the same as we published in our article, with the exciting addition of a new, limited production version called the Red Top Edition. The all new Red Top Edition is based on a Lusso model and comes with a red, cloth top and unique interior. Expect to see the 2018 Fiat 124 Spider towards the end of this year with the new Red Top Edition showing up at dealerships later in the model year.

As was reported in February, Fiat has reconfigured package content on the Lusso and Abarth models for added flexibility compared to 2017 models. Now owners can order individual option groups instead of the large combined packages of last year.

Fiat at The 2017 Geneva Motor Show

The Fiat display at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Fiat 500 and highlighted the latest special editions of the Fiat brand.



Fiat 500 60th Anniversary
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the debut of the Nuova Fiat 500 on July 4, 1957. To commemorate that event, Fiat has introduced a 60th-anniversary special edition. Available as a convertible, the Fiat 500 60th Anniversary sports a new two-tone paint job known as Dolcevita: Three-layer White for the lower body and Pastel Ivory for the hood and pillars. A gray and burgundy pinstripe separates the upper and lower colors.

The interior also has retro details and color scheme, with seats in ivory leather with contrasting burgundy seams, a neat vinyl covered burgundy dash and unique dual-color car mats. A special "560" logo is included which is a red "6" and "0" inside the familiar 500 logo. Neat.

Engine choices are the 500's base 1.2L with 69 HP, the 0.9L TwinAir with 85 HP or the 95 HP 1.3L 16v Multijet II turbodiesel. The Fiat 500 60th Anniversary is available with either a 5-speed manual transmission (6 speed for TwinAir models) or the automated manual Dualogic gearbox with paddle shifters. There is no word if we'll get the 60th Anniversary here in North America.

Fiat S-Design Series
Fiat unveiled their sporty S-Design series at this year's show. The new S-Design is a high style, sporty trim level that will be available starting off on the 500X and Tipo 5 door models.

The 500X S-Design shown had new matte Alpi Green paint and distinctive "18" alloy wheels.

The 500X S-Design also features the following trim with a burnished finish:

• Side moldings
• Door handles
• Front spoiler
• Taillight trim
• Liftgate handle
• Mirror caps

Inside the 500X S-Design, you'll find dark colored trim along with special S-Design upholstery with copper colored 500 logos.

The Tipo 5-door S-Design shown was finished in Metropoli Gray, and Piano Black trims, new diamond pattern 18" alloy wheels and body colored door handles. The interior also gets special treatment with trim changes.

Fiat Fullback Cross
Fiat is showing off their compact pickup truck they sell in various markets. Built on the Fiat 500X/ Jeep Renegade Small Wide 4X4 platform, this sporty pickup is around 208 inches long, 72 inches wide and 70 inches tall or just a tad bigger than a late model Ford Ranger. The vehicle shown has a 2.4-litre common rail turbodiesel engine and develops 180 and 317 lbs-ft (!) of torque. Top speed is 111 mph. Two transmissions are offered: a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. The All-Wheel-Drive Fullback Cross has a Torsen center differential that can be locked and along with an electronic locking rear differential (E-Locker) when the going gets rough.

Sadly, it is unlikely we will ever see the Fiat Fullback Cross here in the US.

Fiat 124 Spider Europa
The new limited edition 124 Spider Europa celebrated the launch of the original version by Pininfarina at the Geneva Show some 36 years ago.

Painted in Passione Red, this well equipped Spider sports silver rear view mirror caps and a set of the highly desirable, 17" four-spoke alloy wheels, developed by Mopar as a tribute to the original Spider's. A numbered plaque on the center console and the 124 logo on the front grille round out the package.

Other Fiats Highlighted
The Fiat 500S is a sporty version of the 500 in Europe. The car has a distinctive look, with unique front and rear bumpers, built-in fog lamps, spoilers and side skirts. An exclusive "Satin Graphite" trim finish on door and trunk handles, mirror caps and wheel trim look good and would be a great addition to the NAFTA cars...

An interesting bit of trivia is in the last six months, the 500S models have accounted for about 15 percent of 500 sales in Europe.

The Fiat 500L has been the best selling in its segment every year since it was launched in 2013. At Geneva, Fiat displayed a fully equipped 500L Trekking complete with Traction+ and a 520 Watt Beats Audio entertainment system.

The Fiat 500L has the interior room of a full-sized car with the economy of a subcompact. The US 500L is one of the best values in family cars with the Trekking model now featuring a new lower price plus Fiat has added $1,700 worth of increased content over last year.

2018 Fiat 124 Spider Model Changes

The order books are open for the 2018 Fiat 124 Spider. The 2018 model year brings new colors and the ability to order individual option groups instead of the large combined packages of last year.

For example, last year if you just wanted to get the Navigation and Sound Group w/SiriusXM, you were required to take the Premium Package that consisted of the Visibility Group, and the Comfort and Convenience Group plus, in the Abarth, Leather Seats. It was an all or nothing deal. For 2018, all the individual groups can be had separately or combined, making it easier to get exactly what you want with the potential of saving money.

Fiat has added three all new colors for 2018 - Puro Bianco Perla, Grigio Chiaro, Bleu Scuro. These new colors bring the total number of colors available on the Lusso to eight this year, up from the seven last year. Abarth models are now offered in 6 colors, up from the five in 2017.

The new Grigio Chiaro and Puro Bianco Perla replace last year's Grigio Argento and Bianco Perla Tri-coat respectively.
