Fiat 500 Abarth Automatic Up Close

Allison Singer, Vehicle Integration Engineer for the Fiat 500 Abarth platform talks about what makes the Fiat 500 Abarth Automatic different than a traditional automatic transmission equipped car. The Fiat 500 Abarth Automatic is not your grandfather's old slushbox!



In the video, Singer describes the care taken to ensure the full 500 Abarth driving experience is retained. When sport mode is selected, more aggressive transmission settings are activated such as throttle-blipping, rev-matching downshifts along with gears being held longer when accelerating out of corners and when getting off the gas. Snappy upshifts (150-200 milliseconds at full-throttle!) are accompanied by a fuel-cut that makes for a nice pop through the dual tailpipes and the transmission downshifts when getting hard on the brakes to assist stopping performance and to ensure the car is in an appropriate gear to accelerate again.

The Aisin AW automatic transmission used in the 500 Abarth is a traditional torque converter type, beefed up for high performance use with more clutch plates and a more robust heat treatment to allow for higher torque capacity. Fiat has announced additional venues for the Abarth Track Experience. What's the Abarth Track Experience you ask? It's a full day of high performance driving instruction that is included with the purchase of every new Fiat 500 Abarth. At the Abarth Experience, owners are able to explore the performance of the 500 Abarth in a safe and controlled race track environment under the watchful eyes of professional high performance driving instructors. One more thing - Fiat supplies the cars!



This year, Fiat has expanded the Abarth Track Experience by adding new locations: Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.; Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn.; and Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Have you had an issue starting your Fiat 500? There is a new Fiat Technical Service Bulletin (Fiat TSB) that has been released announcing a software update that fixes starting issues for owners of 2012 - 2013 Fiat 500 and 500 Abarth models. The symptoms are an occasional cranking no start condition. Fiat 500 owners may also experience an engine that sounds like it is freewheeling or has no compression. In most situations, this is normally resolved by simply trying to restart the car.

Additionally, a small number of Fiat 500 owners may experience a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination with a P2299 (Brake Pedal Position/ Accelerator Pedal Position Incompatible) code being set.

The fix involves reflashing the Fiat 500 Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with revised software. The reflash also enhances cold weather starting performance.

Note this is for 2012-2013 Fiat 500, 500T Turbo and Fiat 500 Abarth models equipped with the 1.4L MultiAir and MultiAir Turbo engines (sales code EAB or EAF).*

All Fiat 500L models sold in the US feature an advanced traction control similar to the Traction Plus system used in Europe that enhances drivability on slippery surfaces. Grab a set of snow tires and you'll be surprised how good a 500L can be when the going gets tough. Still, there are those who live in areas where the remote possibility of getting stuck is not an option. For a person in that situation, All Wheel Drive (AWD) can give that extra bit of assurance that nothing mother nature throws at them will slow them down. Even with front wheel drive, the Fiat 500L goes well on low traction surfaces. This European spec Fiat 500L has the traction plus system that enhances traction. All NAFTA Fiat 500 and 500L models use a similar system as standard equipment.

Fiat and Chrysler Merger Complete

Fiat shareholders approved the merger of Fiat SpA and Chrysler LLC last Friday, officially forming the 7th largest car company in the world. The newly formed group, called Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, will be legally registered in the Netherlands with its headquarters set in Britain. Moving the headquarters out of Torino, Italy, the home of Fiat for 115 years is the one slightly melancholy aspect of the merger to longtime Fiat enthusiasts, however looking at the reasoning makes it clearer why this was done.

Having its tax domicile listed in the United Kingdom is a smart move because of the country's favorable corporate tax structure. It also brings Fiat Chrysler Automobiles closer to neutral territory and gives the company a more global presence. Italy has been struggling for more than a decade through tumultuous economic times. The continual lack of the government to create a clear cut economic plan has resulted in unemployment at near record levels and little progress in attracting economic investments. Taking this into account, it is logical to move the financial headquarter into a more business friendly environment.



The merger of Fiat and Chrysler allows for a brighter future because without the economy of scale, a smaller car manufacturer like Fiat that makes affordable cars has little chances of surviving with ever increasing and costly government-mandated regulations and a reliance on small markets.

While the financial headquarters may be in the UK, it should be noted that the heart of the Fiat Brand will always have an Italian identity. Italian design, style and heritage are what separates the Fiat brand from everything else on the road. It is what makes a Fiat a Fiat.

Fiat July 2014 Sales

The totals are in and Fiat has recorded its best July sales figures since the brand's return to the United States back in 2011. Overall Fiat sales were up 1 percent last month compared to July 2013. This marks the eighth consecutive month of sales growth for the Fiat brand. Fiat sold a total of 3,807 cars last month compared to 3,783 for the same month last year.

The Fiat 500L had a particularly good month in July, selling 1,436 units - an all time record for the roomy 4 door Fiat. Sales of the 500L were up 49 percent last month compared to July 2013.

Sales of the Fiat 500 Hatchbacks and Cabrios, including Abrth models continue to run about 14 - 15 percent lower this year compared to last year.  Still overall Fiat sales are ahead of last year.  Fiat has sold a total of 28,779 cars so far this year compared to 25,395 over the same period last year, a 13 percent improvement.

As the 2015 Fiats begin to show up on Fiat Studio lots within the coming weeks, expect to see some action especially when the new automatic transmission equipped Fiat 500 Abarths, and 500 Turbos hit showrooms.



July Recap
July is always a big month in the Fiat world.  Fiat celebrated their 115th anniversary on July 11th this year, the company being founded in 1899 in Torino, Italy.  Another noteworthy day was July 4th, the 7th "birthday" of the new Fiat 500 and the 57th anniversary of the introduction of the Nuova 500 in 1957.

Other news in July was the Fiat Club of America held their national convention called Fiat FreakOut.  This was the 31st anniversary for the FreakOut and was a resounding success.  Fiat fans from all over North America converged in the Chicago area and enjoyed four days filled with fun activities and great Italian cars. Next year's Fiat FreakOut promises to be something special. 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth models equipped with automatic transmissions began showing up at Fiat Studios in July. Fiat Abarth engineers spent much time calibrating the transmission characteristics to guarantee a sporting and fun Abarth experience. A healthy bump in sales is anticipated.

Fiat 500L Knee Airbag Recall Announced

Chrysler Group LLC just announced the Fiat 500L will be recalled to replace the driver's knee airbag. According to the company, routine testing discovered the possibility that the driver's knee airbag may not deploy in the proper position if the driver is not wearing a seatbelt. The recall effects 2014 and 2015 Fiat 500L models sold in the US and Canada. Chrysler estimates 29,500 cars will be effected by this recall. The numbers break down to approximately 25,500 cars in the US and about 4,000 cars in Canada.

The Fiat 500L driver's knee bag works well when you use it as intended while wearing a seatbelt.

It is important to remember this issue involves drivers who don't wear seatbelts, which is illegal in most if not all of the United States. Chrysler will notify Fiat 500L owners when they can schedule this free service and advises all vehicle occupants wear seatbelts. Owners that are concerned may call Chrysler Group’s Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Fiat 500L Small Overlap Crash

The Fiat 500L, a 2013 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick, recently underwent the institutes new small overlap crash test. The Fiat 500L scored a surprising poor rating in this severe test. While this is a disappointing result, it should be noted that this is the first time the Fiat 500L has earned anything less than the highest rating in a crash test. Since its introduction in 2012, the Fiat 500L has been collecting excellent crash ratings in both Europe and America, actually earning the Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS in 2013.

The 2013 IIHS crash test series simulated a 40 MPH front moderate-overlap impact, a 31 MPH side impact, a roof-crush consistent with a rollover, and a 20 MPH rear collision capable of causing a whiplash injury. The Fiat 500L achieved the highest possible ratings of good in each of these tests and was awarded the Institutes 2013 Top Safety Pick award.

The Fiat 500L underwent the IIHS moderate overlap crash test last year and earned top safety scores.

Moderate overlap front: Good
Roof strength: Good

Side impact: Good

In the National Highway and Traffic Association (NHTSA) frontal tests, cars are crashed into a solid barrier at 35 mph, representing a head-on collision of two cars of similar size and weight each moving at 35 mph.

The 40 mph moderate overlap test performed by the IIHS severely tests the passenger compartment integrity in addition to the restraint system. An offset test is more demanding of a vehicle's structure than a full-width test, while a full-width test is more demanding of a vehicle's safety belts and airbags.¹

Starting in 2012, the IIHS devised a 25 percent small overlap test that simulates the front corner hitting a car or an object like a tree or utility pole. This type of impact is extremely severe because it typically bypasses most of the energy absorbing sections of the car. The IIHS is the only agency in North America or Europe that runs this test.²

For 2014, the small overlap test is being added to the other tests the Institute already runs and the results will effect a car's ability to win the coveted Top Safety Pick award. The new small overlap test subjects only 25% of the front end of the vehicle to a 40 mph impact.

This test, which made its first appearance in 2012, is far more demanding on the vehicle structure than the 40% offset test that has been an industry standard since 1995. In the small overlap test, the main structures of the vehicle’s front-end crush zone are bypassed, making it far more difficult for the vehicle to manage crash energy. The occupant compartment can be compromised as a result.

Many car models are struggling through this new test. In fact, of the 32 cars tested so far, only 19 have achieved a good to acceptable score. The rest have received a poor rating. Cars like the Fiat 500L that were designed before the test are particularly vulnerable to not doing well.

Injury measures

Looking at how the Fiat 500L did in this test, you will notice the 500L actually achieved top marks in Head/Neck and Chest injury measures as well as acceptable ratings in Lower Leg/Foot and Restraint and Dummy Kinematics. The 500L was letdown by a poor injury rating in Hip/Thigh.

Head/neck: Good
Chest: Good
Hip/thigh: Poor
Lower leg/foot: Acceptable

Restraints and dummy kinematics: Acceptable

According to the IIHS:

"The dummy’s head contacted the frontal airbag but slid off the left side as the steering column moved 13 cm to the right, contributing to the head hitting the A-pillar. Head acceleration from the A-pillar hit was low, though. The side curtain airbag deployed and had sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects. The side torso airbag also deployed."

Body Structure: Poor

Bypassing the 500L's main energy absorbing load paths resulted in the safety cage taking the brunt of the impact and allowed what was considered excessive body structure intrusion into the passenger compartment. This was measured at 24-28 cm at the upper hinge pillar/instrument panel and up to 25 cm at the lower hinge pillar. The steering column was also pushed back 14 cm toward the driver. This was rated a poor performance.

Final Thoughts

As in any crash simulation, real world results will vary and crash ratings can only be compared to cars in the same category/weight/size. Taken as a whole, the Fiat 500L has achieved the highest crash test ratings in every test performed in Europe and in North America to date except this recent one.

With Fiat's history of bringing safety innovations to affordable transportation, and based on previous statements, one can expect the company to not only continue striving towards improving vehicle performance for third-party tests, but also in building safe cars that perform well in the real world.
