Alfa 8C Competizione and 8C Spider

Alfa 8C Competizione. Arguably the most desirable modern car created in the past 40 years. Not because it is the fastest or does any one thing the best, but because it stirs the emotions like no other car. The sounds. The shapes. The tactile sensations. This car is as close to being alive as an automobile can get. It is almost a human combination of strengths, quirkiness and weaknesses put out for all to see. It is naked and honest and...FANTASTIC!

The official press release from Alfa Romeo on the 8C for your enjoyment:

Alfa 8C Competizione and Alfa 8C Spider

The German event would not have been complete without an area for Alfa Romeo's exclusive limited edition supercars: the Alfa 8C Competizione and Alfa 8C Spider. These two sports cars have enchanted collectors and aficionados the world over, both pulling in thousands of applications in just a few days.

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione 2006 Concept Car

The cars were designed at the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile and 500 of each were manufactured. Their fully carbon fiber exteriors perfectly embody Alfa Romeo's motoring and mechanical excellence: a slender line that expresses all the beauty of a veritable piece of poetry in motion that harks back to the brand's glorious past while also carrying forward its values of technology and emotion into the future.

Style and aerodynamics embracing tradition and innovation

The marked dynamism of the car is imparted by the horizontal ridge cut into the side extending from the front wheel arch. The big wheels and the mighty "muscles" of the rear wings emphasis the model's personality and strength, without taking away the elegance of the soft flowing lines, almost underlining the exquisite beauty of the exterior's individual parts: the drop-shaped headlights set like precious stones in the front wing, the taillight LEDs embodying technology and functionality, and the classic door handle.

Furthermore, the front end has the trademark Alfa Romeo stylistic features, with a new interpretation of the 'whiskers' and the badge. Not forgetting that this innovative line gives us a glimpse of the parts and proportions of future Alfa Romeo cars, while always sticking to the brand's heritage.

It should be noted that for maximum aerodynamic efficiency levels, the solutions adopted for the Alfa 8C Spider and 8C Competizione are not limited to shape. In fact, all the surfaces and profiles of the pillars and windows, as well as the shape and the position of the wing mirrors, were optimized either through computer calculations or tunnel and road tests. In this way, the air wraps around the car and continues its natural course without being obstructed by uneven or rough edges.

Of course, the unique feature of the Alfa 8C Spider is the Z-fold soft-top, a key design choice for limiting weight and optimizing weight distribution. To make opening and closing operations simple and easy, moving the soft-top is entrusted to an electrohydraulic system controlled by a button on the dashboard, while the manual lock and release ensure the system's smoothness.

In particular, the roof on the Alfa 8C Spider is characterized by a fabric made with two overlapping materials: the outer fabric is multi-layered with high resistance to atmospheric agents, while the inner fabric has high-capacity soundproofing for the passenger compartment. Also, the soft-top, which is available in several colors, was designed with aesthetics, aerodynamics and acoustics in mind as well as functionality, with moving parts specifically developed to make deployment easy, fast and safe.

Interior: personality and technology

Alfa Romeo 8C Spider interior

The two cars are highly sophisticated on the inside thanks to the broad use of composite materials to make the dashboard and the interior panels, as well as the ultra-light carbon fibre ergonomic seats, made in partnership with Sparco, which can be adjusted according to the driver's body shape (a feature reserved until now for race cars).

Furthermore, by focusing on customizing the interior trims as much as possible, the customer can choose from different environments and aesthetic solutions, all hand-crafted and based on close attention to detail: from contrasting or 'ton sur ton' stitching to unique color combinations.

The valuable Frau Pieno Fiore leather upholstery (using an innovative weaving process in which the hide is bound to a natural fiber fabric creating a very profound and strong look) is particularly noteworthy.

Similarly to the interior, great care has been put into making the external parts: from alloy wheels to brake calipers, every detail can be customized because each Alfa 8C Spider or Alfa 8C Competizione is unique. An unmistakable car that reflects its owner's personality. To sum up, the unique and one-off style of the exclusive Alfa 8C heralds the pleasure of a sporty drive fully in keeping with the brand's tradition.

Solid but lightweight structure

A solid but light structure is a pre-requisite for making a good high-performance car. It is also the inspirational principle behind the two cars. The floor panel is steel to get maximum torsional rigidity and ensure a drive that is always precise and safe, while the bodywork is made from carbon fiber.

This is a choice motivated by the requirement to reduce weight as much as possible but also to optimize the car's centre of gravity for better agility and handling on more challenging journeys.

An innovative carbon fiber monolithic windscreen frame was designed in order to ensure high rigidity on the Alfa 8C Spider while maintaining a low roll center.

The sweet-sounding 8-cylinder 4.7 engine

Still focusing on the most sophisticated technology, the two Alfa Romeo supercars use the new 90° V8 engine with a capacity of 4691 cm3 which has been designed with a precise objective: to ensure exceptional performance without sacrificing driving fluidity and the enjoyment of any road situation.

This creates a powerful and progressive engine that develops a maximum power of 450 hp at 7,000 rpm and a peak torque of 480 Nm at 4,750 rpm with maximum revs of 7,500 rpm. A sequential six-speed gearbox has been added to this engine, with gear selection via ergonomic triggers located behind the steering wheel and with a self-locking differential.

In more detail, the internal fluid dynamics and the cooling system cylinder heads are designed for high duct permeability, as well as effective cooling of the intake load to maximize volumetric efficiency and engine performance. Furthermore, the harmonization of the intake and exhaust geometry together with the adoption of continuous variable valve timing units on the intake camshaft, the optimization of the combustion chamber and the calibration of the engine mean that 80% of torque can be obtained from 2,000 rpm.

In sporty driving conditions on different road surfaces, you will welcome the engine's exceptionally short response times due to high intake permeability and low inertia of the two-disc clutch/flywheel system.

The crankshaft with counterweights at 90°, fully balanced with the best arrangement of rods and pistons, ensures that the engine operates with few vibrations. The crankcase/lower crankcase unit is aluminum with five main bearings to ensure the structure is very rigid with low friction losses, just like the cylinder heads are made from an aluminum alloy. Furthermore, all the piping (water, oil, secondary air) is directly in the engine's castings, thus making the system very sturdy, unhindered and safe; in short, extremely reliable.

The integration of the accessory systems with the engine's main castings and the very solid design of all the big-sided parts ensures low noise levels coming from the engine and high component reliability. Even the engine's longitudinal packaging has received special attention, as demonstrated by the adoption of a single chain timing control that ensures exceptional reliability for life.

Alfa Romeo 8C driven by Domenico Martino, responsible for final tuning of the car

Lastly, particular attention has been paid to the acoustic definition and intonation of the intake and exhaust in search of a tone that would enhance the character and render the car unmistakable. The result is a characteristic and full sound, emphasized by a high permeability intake system and an exhaust system with electronically activated valves that enhances the sound of the car in full compliance with regulatory and environmental constraints.

Transmission, sequential gearbox and self-locking differential

Just like the legendary race cars, the Alfa 8C Spider and Alfa 8C Competizione have the transaxle system which ensures the best balance of weight distribution: in fact, the engine is located further back while the gearbox is arranged at the rear in a block with the differential and the hydraulic actuator.

The transaxle structure provides for the rigid connection between the engine and the gearbox casing, which also contains the self-locking differential. The two units are joined by a tube inside turned by the drive shaft: in this way, the load is optimally distributed between the front and rear axle assemblies.

Top Gear Roadtest on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

The six-speed gearbox, with gear selection by means of triggers located behind the steering wheel, has been developed to ensure very quick gear changes and can be used in Manual-Normal, Manual-Sport, Automatic-Normal, Automatic-Sport and Wet modes. Lastly, the self-locking differential enables acceleration and stability to be managed with extraordinary efficiency in any situation.

  Suspension, wheels and braking system

The two cars are Alfa to the core, with an uncompromising sense of control and driveability. Alfa Romeo cars have always been known for drive comfort and dynamic behavior: in the case of these supercars, they become real strong points. This is partly because of the four-sided suspension with forged aluminum uprights and supports, shaped to best control the trajectory of moving wheels. The tires with 20" rims also contribute to excellent road hold, and they have been specially developed to ensure excellent performance: 245/35 at the front and 285/35 at the rear, mounted on spoked wheels and made from flowing aluminum to ensure lightness and the best possible brake ventilation.

Ensuring the best possible suspension and tire setup has maximized comfort while maintaining a sporty performance. The result is excellent dynamics: classic handling so typical of the Alfa Romeo brand, direct steering, responsiveness, clean transitions, and a linear understeer gradient.

On the 8C Spider, it is actually extremely easy to combine accelerator and steering wheel usage, with the maximum longitudinal and transverse accelerations reached at the same time. This is noticeable by excellent responsiveness during sporty driving and easy management of oversteer.

Road test of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

Lastly, both cars have the latest version of the Alfa Romeo VDC, a state-of-the-art system for controlling stability and traction, to give the driver the best possible control over the car. The driver can limit system intervention by driving safely and alertly. Such a system has to be backed up by excellent brakes. That is why the 8C Spider comes with Brembo's F1-inspired carbon ceramic (CCM) brakes as standard.

In a first for a car in this class, and in order to ensure an incredible feeling from the very first time you brake, the system is broken in with a brand new process that guarantees reliability - and it comes as standard on the Alfa 8C Spider. On the 8C Competizione, the braking system has floating-type drilled discs with an aluminum bell. These solutions ensure powerful and effective braking, even under intense use. Finally, the calipers are monobloc to ensure maximum rigidity and less warp due to the high loads generated by pressure from the pistons on the pads.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Coming to USA!

Alfa Romeo Tonale

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is coming to America. Company sources say the stunning Alfa Tonale will make its first appearance in the US at the 2019 LA Auto Show this November. The production version of the Tonale is expected to arrive in the United States in late 2020. Designed by FCA's Centro Stile in Turin, the Alfa Romeo Tonale concept car made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show last March and has already begun winning design awards, such as Auto & Design magazine's International Car Design Award 2019 and Auto Express' Readers' Choice Design Award 2019.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Rear
Note: Concept car shown. The production Tonale will incorporate many of the design cues of the concept car and will look similar, but there likely will be differences to facilitate production and to satisfy Government mandated regulations.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is the company's first plug-in hybrid, and its goal is to combine state-of-the-art technology with best-in-class driving dynamics. Below is the official press release on the concept car.

The New Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept Vehicle: Electrification Meets Beauty And Dynamism

  • First Alfa Romeo plug-in hybrid premium compact SUV makes its debut at 2019 Geneva International Motor Show
  • Distinctive features of Italian style are projected into the future, striking the perfect blend of valued heritage and anticipation of a new evolution for Alfa Romeo
  • In keeping with Alfa Romeo’s DNA, every detail is designed according to the driver's needs
  • Tonale premium compact SUV concept is Alfa Romeo’s take on electrification: state-of-the-art technology and enticing driving dynamics

Alfa Romeo is breaking into the electric vehicle world at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, revealing the new concept of the Alfa Romeo Tonale premium compact SUV. The Tonale is the first plug-in hybrid and the first premium compact SUV for Alfa Romeo. It rewrites the rules of today's fastest growing segment using the brand’s trademark language made up of gorgeous Italian design and unparalleled driving dynamics.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Front

A Premium Compact SUV Inspired By Beauty And Alfa Romeo’s Design DNA
The design of the Tonale is an expression that looks fondly into our future. Its compact dimensions embody unique Italian design and the unmistakable original and modern style typical of Alfa Romeo, striking the perfect blend of valued heritage and anticipation of a new evolution. Alfa Romeo holds dear the essence of Italian art and sculpture through the timeless “artigianale” experience of hand sculpting.

Alfa Tonale Front Rendering

The Tonale is inspired by the beauty and nuances associated with human forms, and the organic movement of light resulted by pure lines and volumes. Its design tangibly recalls a number of time-honored style elements that are synonymous with the rich history of Alfa Romeo, with an execution that excites a modern approach to the new Alfa Romeo anatomy.

An element that echoes the tradition of Alfa Romeo’s DNA is the phone dial wheel. The Tonale’s 21-inch wheel design displays this through a lightweight architectural construction, creating an honest and impactful execution of the circular theme. The lineage of the phone dial wheel dates back to the 1960s, worn proudly on the iconic 33 Stradale. The distinctive Tonale wheel design is also celebrated harmoniously with an exclusive Pirelli tire scheme.

Alfa Tonale Side Rendering

The bold, elegant volumes of the body side make reference to a seemingly distant past, recalling the sensual qualities found in the pure forms of the Duetto and the Disco Volante Spider, while the Tonale’s “Linea GT” interprets the tension and confidence of the pouncing stance found on the beloved GT Junior. The front end sports Alfa Romeo’s signature “Trilobo” and the distinctive “Scudetto” grille that serves as the central point of strength, driving the speed and fluidity that moves throughout the Tonale. Flanking the iconic “Scudetto” and completing the front monographic is the “3 plus 3” forward lighting that evokes the proud gaze reflective of the SZ and Brera.

Alfa Tonale Rear

Alfa Romeo Tonale Rear

The rear of the Tonale is elegantly defined by an enveloping window volume, complemented on top by the suspended wing that enhances the continuity between the transparent roof and the rear window itself. As every Alfa Romeo design is cared for through the human touch, the rear lighting is reminiscent of an artistic signature, rather than an optical lighting element … a sort of luminous signature born directly from the artist’s hand.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Interior

With the inspiration of Alfa Romeo’s racing history at the core, the Tonale interior design conjures the passion associated with providing a spirited drive through dynamic form and pure sculpture. The interior of the Tonale is very driver oriented and the overall layout is designed comfortably for four passengers. The hand-drawn gestural lines stretch throughout the environment to create a muscular tension, as if what surrounds you is ready to lunge forward.

The emotional significance of the Tonale interior is also generated by the contrast of rich materials, such as the cold solidity of aluminum combined with the soft and welcoming warmth of the leather and Alcantara. Inside there are translucent backlit panels, such as the central tunnel, providing the perfect location for the essential Alfa Romeo element, the DNA drive mode selector. The Tonale interior provides an inclusive experience, with details typically reserved for the exclusive. The interior is immersive and welcoming, with the dynamic attributes appreciated by those who love to drive.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Steering Wheel

The Tonale concept vehicle is equipped with the highest levels of technology to ensure a connected, comfortable and dynamic user experience, while keeping the pleasure of a sporty drive at the forefront.

The driver's attention will be on the road, with the peripheral focus on a 12.3-inch full digital cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen central head unit. The new infotainment features a seamless and fluid multitasking interface that allows the driver to have all the latest features and functionality readily available at their fingertips. The Tonale allows the driver to be fully connected to the Alfa Romeo Lifestyle and Social communities, realized and presented through the new infotainment features, “Alfista” and “Paddock”.
  • "Alfista” is an immersive Alfa Romeo Lifestyle experience, providing a fully connected interface with select Alfa Romeo clubs and community events, such as gatherings, drives and meets. This in-vehicle app allows the driver access to live news and updates about the current happenings of the Alfa Romeo brand. The customer has the ability to confirm attendance to events and gatherings, order Alfa Romeo Racing tickets, as well as apply for opportunities to win VIP access to special Alfa Romeo sponsored events, just to name a few.
  • “Paddock” is the Alfa Romeo Tonale in-vehicle garage and market for real-time viewing and purchasing of the latest interior and exterior performance upgrades and equipment. The Paddock app also enables the customer to scroll through the latest offerings of Alfa Romeo Merchandise and Apparel, which can be ordered direct with the touch of the screen.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is our look into the future of the premium compact SUV segment, creating a holistic creative expression and through the blend of beauty and technology. For Alfa Romeo Design, it is our “opera d’arte,” or piece of art … otherwise expressed as our Alfa Romeo Tonale.

Alfa Tonale Concept Drawing

Authentically Alfa Romeo
The Tonale marks the debut of the brand in the premium compact utility vehicle segment and does so in line with the characteristics that have always identified each Alfa Romeo model. The goal is to deliver the best driving dynamics in the segment and to apply electrification in perfect Alfa Romeo style.

It is the natural evolution of the brand on the way toward propulsive synergy capable of enhancing performance and driving dynamics. Rather than simply adapting to new standards, with the Tonale concept car Alfa Romeo is reinterpreting its own DNA to capture the new idea of beauty, energy, harmony, efficiency and driving user-friendliness.

Alfa Tonale Rear Door Handle

The electrification of Alfa Romeo comes at the service of sportiness and emphasizes the famous "Mechanics of Emotions" mission of the brand. For this reason, it has no need to express itself through signatures or decided livery, but just with small details such as the Alfa logo, or “Biscione” in hybrid optics, a small yet definitive detail that enhances the Tonale.

The rear electric engine opens the way to new technological solutions that offer driving dynamics, maximizes the drive and the pleasure of sporty driving. The evolution is also evident in the drive modes managed by Alfa D.N.A. From the beginning on the 4C and through the development with Giulia and Stelvio, it has reached the Tonale and now implements specific energy management functions.
  • "Dynamic" mode evolves into "Dual Power" mode and guarantees maximum output from the two engines
  • "Natural" mode continues to maintain the best performance optimization, and the compromise between using electric and internal combustion engines is managed automatically. This translates into everyday energy and fuel savings, but not at the detriment of performance
  • The “Advance Efficiency” mode becomes “Advance E” for performance in full electric mode. So, in line with the principles of the brand, the plug-in hybrid propulsion enhances the beauty, sporty and dynamic driving characteristics of each Alfa Romeo model, taking them to a new level. In Tonale, electrification embraces performance and represents a new way to achieve high performance and outstanding driving fun
  • The infotainment touch screen features an “E-mozione” button, which offers specific throttle settings, sharper braking and a more direct steering response

Alfa Tonale Concept Drawing

Alfa Romeo Tonale
The Tonale embodies the adventure potential of a premium compact, dynamic sport utility vehicle capable of guaranteeing the adrenaline of sporty driving inherent in the legend of the brand, in urban settings with the same ease. The hum of the electric motor accompanies the genuinely Alfa Romeo roar creating an efficient, exciting synergy at the service of driving pleasure. The energy switch to electric is the latest key page in the 109-year-long history of the Alfa Romeo legend and one which will propel the brand into the future.

Alfa Tonale Concept Side

This is also behind the name chosen for the new concept car. The Tonale Pass, not far from the Stelvio Pass in the Alps, is a large natural amphitheater famous for its majestic peaks, the natural spectacle of frothy waterfalls and snow all year round in a breath-taking natural setting. Directly connected to the Stelvio Pass, excitement and harmony coexist in the Tonale Pass area. The Tonale is an important development under the sign of continuity and geographical proximity, an evolution traced in time in an evocative association.

Alfa Giulia Motor Trend Car of The Year

Alfa Giulia Car of The Year

The Alfa Romeo Giulia has won Motor Trend magazine's Car of The Year Award, besting a competitive field of 46 cars. The Motor Trend Car of The Year award is in its 70th year and has developed into an exhaustive evaluation. There are performance tests to measure acceleration, braking, and handling. After that, design and features are evaluated as well as on the road, everyday driving impressions. This year, the competition was fierce with competitors such as the new BMW 5 series, Tesla Model 3, Lexus LC 500h, and Porsche Panamera to name a few.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia was picked over the competition not only for its overall performance, value, and design but also for its sheer driving enjoyment.

Some of the quotes from the evaluation:

“There is sorcery in this car,” road test editor Chris Walton says. “The Giulia fills the space vacated by BMW. Yet even at the apex of its reign, a 3 Series never rode this well or cornered with such poise and precision simultaneously.”

“Best steering, best chassis—this car saves the sport sedan market.”

"On top of its outstanding performance, superior handling, strong fuel economy, excellent safety record, and killer value, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is just flat-out fun."

Alfa Giulia

What's important to note is while everyone knows the 505 hp M3 crushing Giulia Quadrifoglio is a top performer, Motor Trend commended the standard Giulia models saying:

"What clinched the Calipers was the base Giulia. Many brands make blazingly fast performance sedans, but when the exercise is reduced by mass-market pressures, the lesser version is often found lacking. Not so here. The $38,990 base Giulia achieves something Acura, Lexus, Infiniti, and Jaguar have tried futilely to do for decades: build a better compact sport sedan than the Deutschlanders."

Alfa Giulia Interior

Also praised was the Giulias interior design:

"Many luxury sedans have imitated the stark Germanic style. But Alfa retained its legacy of what an Italian car’s exterior and interior should look like. It is unmistakable and sensual, imbuing a cosmopolitan glamour to the driver."

Alfa Romeo Giulia

You would think a car with all these attributes would carry a high-end price but what cinches the deal is the Giulia can be considered a bargain. For the price of a mundane and boring Camry, you can get a world class leading sedan. Motor Trend acknowledges this by saying:

"Now let’s talk value. This segment is cutthroat, and Alfa has not flinched at what is expected. After following the industry-standard 36-month, $399/month lease deal, it launched a 24-month, $299/month lease deal that should get the attention of any individual with Maserati tastes but a Mazda budget."

Alfa Giulia QV

Finally, Motor Trend summed up the Giulia this way:

"The Giulia was the only vehicle whose essence enraptured the jury with its charm and unbridled zeal for driving. Nearly every judge uttered the word “love” when describing this car."

The Senior Feature Editor said it all -

“I would be so happy if every day I got to be in this car."
