Fiat is making a big splash this weekend at the Vans US Open of Surfing. Starting July 26 and running through August 3 in Huntington Beach, California, the Vans US Open of Surfing is the largest surfing competition in the world. This year, Fiat will be pulling out the stops with a beach display showing off its full model range, including the Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio, 500L Trekking, and the all-electric Fiat 500e. Fiat will also debut a special Fiat 500L design concept inspired by the Vans clothing and accessories brand.

Fiat Water Ski

This is the second year in a row that Fiat has partnered with the Vans US Open. The event is expected to draw 500,000 spectators.

Jason Stoicevich, Head of Fiat brand North America explains why teaming up with the US Open of Surfing is a good fit for the brand:

“Last year’s Vans US Open of Surfing gave us the opportunity to be a part of an event that matches the spirit and playfulness of the FIAT brand. As we continue to launch new products, including the all-new automatic Fiat 500 Abarth, the US Open of Surfing remains a great platform to showcase the depth of our portfolio and interact with the young audience attending this event.”

Fiat 500 Watercrafts Cruising

In addition to the land display, Fiat will bring back its Fiat 500 watercrafts that debuted at the event last year. Fiat and Renault Team Up for New Vehicle

Fiat Scudo Commercial Van

Fiat and Renault have signed an agreement to produce a new commercial vehicle to be manufactured at a Renault factory in France. The vehicle will be the replacement for the Fiat Scudo, a medium duty commercial van that Fiat had produced in a joint venture with France's Peugeot. Fiat and Peugeot had cooperated on the Scudo for the past 20 years, but that will end when its replacement arrives in 2016. The new Fiat commercial van will feature distinctive Fiat Professional design elements and be based on a Renault platform. Production will begin during the second quarter of 2016 at the French company's Sandouville plant.

Fiat Scudo Passenger Van

The Fiat Scudo is smaller than the Fiat Ducato (Ram ProMaster in the North America) and comes in either a cargo or passenger van configuration.

2014 Fiat FreakOut Recap

2014 Fiat FreakOut

The Fiat Club America held their annual Fiat FreakOut national convention last weekend and the highly anticipated event was another roaring success. It was the 31st year for the Fiat FreakOut and the event was held in the Chicago area for the first time. Fiat owners and fans from all around North America enjoyed four days filled with fun activities and friendly people. There were plenty of new and vintage Fiats on hand to entertain.

2014 Fiat FreakOut Show

The Fiat FreakOut is always chock full with things to do and this year's event kicked off with some kart racing. A poker run to the Volo Auto Museum and a late night cruise around Chicago were memorable. One of the key things about the Fiat FreakOut is socializing with fellow Fiat owners and the FreakOut's cocktail parties, lunches and dinners are a relaxed way to meet new people. Wandering the parking lot and seeing rare Fiats and talking with friendly owners is a popular Fiat FreakOut pastime. Vendors, movies and raffle prizes also added to the enjoyment and things to do.

1976 Lancia Scorpion at FreakOut

The highlight of the event is the concours auto show held on Saturday. This year, some early rain in the day failed to dampen the mood and the show field was full of some of the best examples of vintage, rare and significant Fiat Group cars.

Fiat USA was a major sponsor and sent a street team with the Fiat 500L to display. Nicole Longhini, Brand Manager for Fiat North America, was there for the second year in a row and gave a presentation on Fiat marketing that included the Funny or Die comedy video "Neighbors."

The 2015 Fiat FreakOut is already in the works, so make plans next year this time to attend. We'll have info on the 2015 Fiat FreakOut as soon as it is available, so keep an eye here on the blog. Don't forget to visit the Fiat Club America website and join the largest Fiat club in America!

Fiat 500 Tech Bulletin Updates

Fiat 500 Test Track

Since its introduction just over three years ago, there have been more than 141,000 Fiat 500s delivered to owners in North America. The Fiat 500 is unique because it provides a high style, fun Italian driving experience at an affordable price point. Like any new model though, there are always going to be quirks, annoyances or issues that rear their head over time. Fiat has published a few updates recently that address the petty annoyances that some owners have experienced.

Fiat 500C Cabrio

These updates are in the form of Technical Service Bulletins issued to Fiat Studio technicians to help them identify, diagnose and rectify these issues. Here are a few of the latest Fiat TSBs that may be of interest to owners. Note: not all cars will have these issues and as always, consult your Fiat Studio for the latest information and to see if your car falls under these bulletins.

How to find your Fiat 500's MDH (Month Day Hour):

Fiat Technical Service Bulletin 23-015-14: Rear Window Washer Nozzle Drips And/Or Leaks While Driving

2012 - 2013 FF 500
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or before April 15, 2013 (MDH 0415XX) equipped with Rear Window Wiper/Washer sales codes (JHB).
Qty. Part No. Description
1 68238613AA CHECK VALVE, Washer

This latest TSB has to do with a rear window washer that leaks. Some cars built before April 15, 2013 may exhibit a rear washer nozzle that dribbles occasionally. Fiat has issued an update that involves installing a check valve and hose assembly behind the rear window washer nozzle.

Fiat Technical Service Bulletin 08-012-14 REV. A: Clock In The Cluster Gains Or Loses Time

2012 Fiat 500 Models

This can happen on 2012 Fiat 500s. An owner may notice the clock picks up a minute or two a month or lose the same amount. This minor problem may or may not be annoying, but now there is a solution out there that involves updating the software in the Instrument Panel Cluster.

Fiat Technical Service Bulletin 17-001-14: Rear Axle Alignment Shims

Fiat 500
Part Number: 68236620AA Shim Kit : (Kit contains 1 front shim, 1 rear shim, and 4 spindle bolts)

This bulletin is to inform service personnel of the availability of rear axle alignment shims.

This is something Fiat owners have been waiting for, especially owners of the high performance Fiat 500 Abarth model. The rear suspension on a Fiat 500 is a torsion beam axle design. This type of suspension has a limited range of wheel alignment adjustment built in. Until the release of this kit, you were only able to shift the axle over to correct thrust angle adjustment on a Fiat 500. Now with this kit, toe in or out can be adjusted. The kit contains two rear axle alignment shims and replacement spindle mounting bolts. This is enough for one side.

Here are a couple of notes when using these shims. Please refer to the Fiat 500 Repair Manual available online at the Tech Authority website.

Before ordering the Axle Alignment Shim Kit, first attempt to correct the out of toe condition, by adjusting the alignment thrust angle until a zero thrust angle is achieved. If the toe angle is still out of specification after adjusting the thrust angle, use the Axle Alignment Shim to correct the out of specification toe condition. Shim will provide approximately 1/4 degree of toe correction. Do not use more than one shim kit per axle side and do not stack shims.

CAUTION: Do NOT completely remove more than 1 spindle bolt at a time to prevent the spindle and wheel assembly from rotating or coming off the vehicle because damage to the brake hose may occur. Loosen but do NOT remove all four spindle bolts on side of rear axle requiring alignment shim.

Note: Some repair manuals may have the wrong alignment specs listed:

2014 Fiat FreakOut Happening Now!

On the Road to the Fiat FreakOut

Fiat owners from all around North America are packed up and heading right now to the Chicago area for the Fiat FreakOut, the largest Fiat event of the year. The Fiat Club America's national convention is a four-day event filled with cars, activities and enjoyable, fun people. This year, the event is held in a beautiful location, 30 miles west of downtown Chicago at Pheasant Run Resort, a 250 acre resort.

Fiat 500 Abarth Trunk Room

The Fiat FreakOut kicked off yesterday but runs through Sunday, July 14th. Registration deadlines have passed, but there are still ways to participate and enjoy the event. For example, the car show Saturday is open to viewing and starts at 9:30 AM at Cantigny Park, a gorgeous park about 9 miles from the Resort. The Park does collect a small fee to get in, but it is nominal. There will be vendor tables setup at the hotel and, of course, plenty of late night parking lot action where you can mingle and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere loaded with Italian car talk. It is definitely worth a road trip to see what the Fiat FreakOut is all about.

Fiat "Neighbors" Web Series

Fiat Neighbors Web Series

Fiat in partnership with the comedy video website Funny Or Die has launched a web series titled “Neighbors." The web series features five webisodes showcasing the 2014 Fiat 500L as it follows the adventures (or misadventures) of a suburban American couple as they interact with their new Italian neighbors. “Neighbors,” debuted in June on Funny Or Die and was promoted on the TBS cable channel. Fiat’s “Neighbors” will premiere its final two episodes this week on Funny Or Die, which can be viewed at

The Fiat web series "Neighbors" is the follow up to the popular "Backseat Italians" that aired earlier on the Funny Or Die website.

Fiat 500L and Neighbors

According to Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer - Chrysler Group LLC and Fiat Group Automobiles Head of Fiat Brand:

"The FIAT brand’s playful personality and Italian heritage give us license to find new ways to tell our brand story. Partnering with Funny Or Die, which has a huge built-in fan base and social media following, has proven to be a winning formula for us. The reaction to our ‘Backseat Italians’ video proved the power of great content and a passionate fan base that Funny Or Die brings to the partnership. Since the launch of this latest series of videos, we've seen an uptick in web traffic, and this deeper engagement with our brand ultimately leads to FIAT Studio visits.”

The web series begins with “The New Neighbors Are So … Italian,” when a middle-age suburban couple gears up to meet the hot, young and stylish Italians moving in to the house next door. The series follows the two couples through a series of four additional episodes: “Espress Lane to Trouble” proves that overdosing on espresso is no way to impress the cool, new Italian neighbor; “Spanking” demonstrates that the threat of being punished by a beautiful woman somehow does nothing to stop the neighborhood boys’ bad behavior; “Gluten Free” brings the American couple over for dinner at the Italian neighbor's home; and finally, “When in Rome” leaves everyone lost in translation when a figure of speech leads to a big misunderstanding.

Fiat Neighbors Spanking

Viewers of “Neighbors” can follow along on Twitter by using the hashtag #italianneighbors. The posted webisodes currently hold “Funny” rankings by Funny Or Die viewers.

In celebration of world soccer fever with cultures coming together all over the world, FIAT is sponsoring “Funny Or Die Soccer Week,” a special weeklong programming event featuring soccer-themed videos and articles, which can be viewed at

Fiat 500 Abarth Automatic Video

Fiat 500 Abarth Autocross

In this video, Matt Davis, Head of Product Marketing and Jason Stoicevich, Head of Fiat Brand for North America, give an overview on some of the features and rational behind the new 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth Automatic. The new car is scheduled to hit Fiat Studios by the end of summer and sporst revised interior features, a new digital instrument cluster and automatic transmission option. Davis answers purists concerns about the driving dynamics of the car, while Stoicevich explains that 50 percent of the sales that come from the Fiat 500 Abarth competitors are equipped with an automatic transmission. Fiat 500 Abarth sales have been up 16 percent over last year and the new automatic transmission option is expected to give a nice bump to sales.

Performance of the Fiat 500 Abarth Automatic is said to be on par with the manual transmission equipped car - with 0 - 60 mph acceleration only being slower by .2 seconds. Extra care has been taken to guarantee the 500 Abarth's sporting driving experience is retained. Pressing the dash mounted Sport button switch activates more aggressive transmission settings such as throttle-blipping, rev-matching downshifts, and allows the gears to be held longer when accelerating out of corners and when getting off the gas. Fuel-cut upshifts smooth out drivetrain shock, and the transmission downshifts when getting hard on the brakes to assist stopping performance and to ensure the car is in an appropriate gear to accelerate again. Upshifts at full-throttle can occur in as little as 150-200 milliseconds!

2015 Fiat 500 Abarth Automatic Cabrio

Fuel economy for the 500 Abarth Automatic is EPA rated to get 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for a combined average of 27 mpg. This is just slightly less than the manual transmission's 28 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined average figures.

New Jeep Gives Clues on Fiat 500X

Fiat 500X
Fiat 500X Concept was first shown in 2012.

The recently unveiled 2015 Jeep Renegade is built on the Fiat chassis called the Small Wide 4x4 Architecture. This flexible platform is derived from the Fiat 500L and will be used in the upcoming Fiat 500X Crossover. The specifications for the Jeep Renegade give some clues about Fiat 500X.

Jeep Renegade

The two new models will be built on the same assembly line at the Fiat plant in Melfi, Italy. The Jeep Renegade will begin production during the second quarter of this year, with the 500X following sometime during the third quarter. Anticipated production volume is estimated at 280,000 cars with the 500X accounting for 150,000 of this total.

Fiat Sedici

The Fiat 500X replaces the Fiat Sedici crossover that Fiat sells in Europe. The Fiat Sedici is a joint venture with Suzuki and will be recognized in the US as the Suzuki SX4.

Fiat 500X Body
Fiat 500X bodies lined up at the factory waiting for assembly. Note the Jeep Renegade bodies in the background.

The Fiat 500X is rumored to make its public debut tomorrow on July 4th - the 57th anniversary of the introduction of the Nuova Fiat 500. While we are waiting, let's take a look at the specification on the Jeep Renegade and get familiar with the platform. We'll see what corresponds to the Fiat 500X once we get more information.

Fiat 500L and 500X
This image was included in the 500L Design Brief to illustrate the 500L concept of maximum interior room, minimum overhang. It also gives a clue to the sporty 500X Crossover's proportions.

What we know is the Fiat 500X will be available in 2 and 4-wheel drive variants. Length is said to be around 165 inches (4.2 meters), about 26 inches longer than the 500 hatchback and a few inches longer than the European-spec 500L. The US version is expected (guaranteed?) to have the 1.4L MultiAir Turbo used in the 500L model, so that is no mystery. The C635 manual and DDC transmission is also a given. However, we have included the specs on the 2.4 L TigerShark engine along with the 9-speed Automatic just in case that becomes available.

Fiat 500 Sales for June 2014

Fiat 500L Lounge

Fiat recorded its best June sales figures since the brand came back to the US market in 2011. Fiat sold a total of 4,478 cars last month compared to 4,050 cars the same month a year ago - an 11 percent increase and the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. So far this year, Fiat has sold a total of 24,972 cars, up 16 percent over last year's 21,612 year-to-date total.

Sales of Fiat 500 hatchback and Cabrio models reached 3,328 for June, about the same as last month. The Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio enjoyed a 130 percent year-over-year sales increase, the strongest sales gain of any Fiat 500 model for the month. Below is a look at how sales of the Fiat 500 stack up against its popular competitors:
  • Fiat 500 June sales = 3,328, year-to-date total = 18,179
  • VW Golf June sales = 2,528 year-to-date total = 11,469
  • MINI Cooper June sales = 3,238, year-to-date total = 12,604
  • Hyundai Veloster June sales = 2,554 year-to-date total = 14,970
Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio
Sales of the Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio have been up significantly this year. Fiat continued to have year-over-year sales gains last month, despite the month having two less selling days compared to June 2013.

Fiat 500L sales were 1,150 units, up 113 percent compared to June 2013, the first month the 500L was sold in the US. It should be noted sales of the Fiat 500L began halfway through June 2013, so the percentage increase is not 100 percent comparable. If you look at the first full twelve months of sales (July 2013 - June 2014) you'll see that Fiat sold a total of 13,654 500L MPVs in the United States during that time. The figure rises to 16,165 if you include Canadian sales.

June Recap
When it comes to social media, Fiat is always at the top of the game. There seems to always be multiple contests running each month on Fiat's Facebook page and last month we saw the "Jonesin' for a Fiat 500" and "Fiat's Open Road Challenge" contests kick off.

Fiat launched its new Tumblr page by introducing its new "Endless Fun" media campaign. The ‘Endless Fun’ campaign features 15 second animated GIFS that highlight specific attributes of particular Fiat models. These inexpensive ads have been run on TV and have been somewhat controversial because they are so unusual, but there is no doubt they definitely capture your attention.

June also brought some excitement to Abarth fans, with the road debut of the Abarth 695 biposto. The most outrageous factory Abarth 695 was the official car of the Gumball 3000 Rally. While we won't see the Abarth 695 biposto here in North America, the model has given inspiration to many Fiat 500 Abarth owners on this side of the Atlantic.

Fiat announced production of the 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth has begun at its Toluco, Mexico plant. The new 2015 car features updated interior features, a digital dashboard and the availability of an optional automatic transmission. The 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth will hit showrooms towards the end of the summer.

The US media finally got its hands on the US version of the Alfa Romeo 4C last month and rave reviews followed. You can find the official Alfa Romeo dealer list here:

Next month, Fiat owners from around North America and beyond will converge on Chicago for the 31st annual Fiat FreakOut. The national convention of the Fiat Club America is the largest get together of Fiat owners in the country and is something you cannot miss. Deadlines are very close, so make sure you register for the 2014 Fiat FreakOut now!
