The US Fiat 500 Abarth...How much horsepower? Try 170hp!

Chrysler has just released their specifications on the 1.4L MultiAir engine that will equip the Fiat 500 Abarth. The 1.4L MultiAir Turbo will be rated at 170hp* , that's up from the standard European spec'd version with 135hp and even up from the optional Esseesse version with 160hp. The US version 1.4-liter FIRE Turbo with Multiair* 170 horsepower (128 kW) @ 6750 rpm 170 lb.-ft. (231 Nm) of torque @ 3000 rpm That power output, 2.04hp/cu in (124 hp/litre), puts the 1.4L MultiAir Turbo engine as having one of the highest specific power values in the world! Previously, I speculated that the original Abarth's 135hp wouldn't be sufficient for the US market, based on its competitors (you can read more about that here ). I thought a 3 cylinder SGE engine with 157hp or, better yet, the 170hp unit from the Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde would be more like it. Oil is the life blood of an engine, and this is especially true of the Fiat 500 Abarth's MultiAir engine. With its MultiAir valvetrain technology, the sophisticated engine is a marvel of engineering and ingenuity. The intake valves are operated by electro-hydraulic solenoids giving the engine infinitely variable valve timing -stroke by stroke - cylinder by cylinder. The engine is tuned to deliver maximum fun to drive characteristics meaning great low end torque along with substantial high rpm horsepower. This is done while achieving excellent fuel economy and the required low emissions. The proof is the Fiat 500 Abarth's engine has a specific power output of 117 bhp/L, beating the 114 bhp/L for the Mazda Speed 2, 113 bhp/L for the MINI S and 100 bhp/L in the VW GTI and still manages to be the most fuel efficient performance car available in the US. This post is from 2009; exactly 1 year before the official pricing of the 2012 Fiat 500 was announced. Read the article and then go HERE to see how close I got! Much speculation exists on the Internet on what price the Fiat 500 will be. It seems that people who aren't thrilled with the Chrysler/Fiat merger put a negative spin out there that the 500 will be in the $20,000 to $25,000 range.
