Abarth 124 Rally Testing Video

Abarth 124 Rally Prototipo

Abarth has released a video of the new 124 Rally being tested in advance of its 2017 racing debut. The new Abarth 124 Rally is heavily modified 124 Spider that is homologated to run in the FIA Group R-GT Rally series.

Replacing the standard 1.4 liter MultiAir Turbo is a 1.8 liter "bialbero" turbocharged direct injection engine with up to 300HP at 6500 rpm. Bialbero is the Italian way of saying "Twin Cam" which is a nod to the historic Twin Cam engines the company produced in the 1960s.

Abarth 124 Rally Engine

People will recognize this engine as the Alfa Romeo 1750 Turbo Benzina used in cars like the Giulietta and 4C sports cars. A sequential six-speed paddle shifted transmission, and a mechanical self-locking differential is also part of the package.

The Italian race specialist company, LM Gianetti, worked with Abarth's Technical Team to completely re-engineer the bodywork and the suspension of the new Abarth Rally. The first change is the replacement of the convertible top with a fixed carbon fiber hard top. Full rally spec chassis reinforcements and roll bar are added. EXT SHOX contributed and developed a 4-way adjustable coilovers for use in the purpose-built rally car. BMC worked together with Abarth to develop a high-performance air intake system, and the OZ wheel company came up with a new, light-weight rugged racing wheel. Michelin tires are specified, size 225/45R18c on the 8x18 ET53 wheels with a bolt pattern of 5 holes on PCD110mm.

Abarth 124 Rally Interior

Sabelt supplies the seats as well as racing harnesses and the interior is trimmed in Alcantara to cut on down sun glare and reduce weight.

Original Fiat Abarth 124 Rally on the Sanremo Rally circuit.

In addition to being able to compete in the R-GT Rally series, Abarth will have its own promotional race series or Trophy. Abarth will also offer the best under-23 driver in the series the driver's seat in an official factory 124 Rally to compete in the Montecarlo Rally during the opening event of the Rally World Championship.

Abarth 124 Rally Prototype

An interesting bit of trivia is the Abarth 124 Rally has an internal project code of SE139. This designation is said to have a history that goes back directly to Carlo Abarth. The SE stands for "Sports" and "Experimental," and the 139 is a progressive number that pays tribute to the 67-year history of Abarth, which has managed to develop an average of two racing projects per year. Something only a select few car manufacturers can be proud of.

The new Abarth 124 Rally can be ordered on the website www.racing.abarth.com and by writing to 124rally@abarth.com.

Fiat 500 Stuck Ignition Key Fix

Fiat 500 Ignition Switch

Here is a heads up for anyone who experiences not being able to remove your ignition key from your Fiat 500 or Fiat 500L. This typically happens when the car's 12-volt battery is run down or dead, and the chip in your key can’t be correctly identified by your vehicle’s theft-deterrent system. This is not exclusive to Fiat but is now a common situation in many modern cars. Below is how to remove a stuck ignition key from your Fiat 500 and 500L using the manual key release.*

Fiat 500 Abarth Steering Column
Remove the steering column lower shroud by removing the screws marked by the blue arrows. Carefully pry the lower and upper cover apart. Be cautious with this trim piece as it can be fragile.

When inserted, the ignition key FOB depresses a button within the ignition switch (1) used for the key-in-ignition reminder. The key-in reminder is monitored by the Body Control Module (BCM). The ignition switch has an antenna ring mounted (2) to it, which is used by the BCM to read the key FOB and verify that it is valid.

Fiat 500 Manual Ignition Key Release

In case the key is unable to return to the OFF position for any reason, many Fiat 500 and 500L models have a manual key release lever (3) mounted to the ignition cylinder. Pressing the lever will allow the key to be turned to the OFF position, and the key can be removed from the ignition switch. Note, your lever may be mounted on the forward side of the ignition cylinder and may be colored red.

*Note, not all the cars have this feature, but it is a simple procedure and worth checking. If your car doesn't have the manual key release, and your battery is dead, charging your battery or changing it will normally release the key

Alfa Giulia QV Fastest Four-Door

The BMW M3 killing Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio set the record as fastest four-door production car ever on the Nürburgring with a time of 7 minutes and 32 seconds. That's faster than the BMW M3 F80's 7:35 time, the M3 CSL and M4's 7:50 time and even quicker than a Lamborghini Murcielago.

The Giulia was developed by a team of elite engineers hand picked from all over FCA and overseen by senior managers and engineers from Ferrari. With a Ferrari-derived, 510 hp Twin Turbo V6, and patented suspension systems along with a host of technological advancements, the Giulia Quadrifoglio offers stupendous performance as can be seen in the video.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia is expected to arrive in North America later this year.

2017 Fiat 500 and Abarth Model Changes

2017 Fiat 500 Pop

Fiat is revamping and repricing its entire model lineup for 2017. Fiat 500 hatch and Cabrio models including Abarth models feature extreme value with upgraded trim levels and a new low, low prices. For example, what was the higher spec $17,745 500 Easy model last year, now is renamed and becomes this year's base entry 500 Pop with a low $14,995 price. That's $2,750 less than the 2016 500 Easy model and even $2,000 less than last year's base Pop. The new 2017 Fiat 500 Pop is even $1,000 less compared to its price when it was originally introduced in 2011 and now has even more equipment.

This is just a taste of the savings, though. Lounge models are $2,000 less than last year and the high performance 2017 500 Abarth now is $2,580 lower than last year. Cabrio models also get revised pricing and range from $4,605 to $5,205 less than last year's comparable model. This is facilitated because now the Cabrio option can be added to any model for just $1,495. It should be noted that the price cuts are done without removing any features, and Fiat has even added additional content in most cases.

To streamline the lineup this year, Fiat is dropping last year's Easy model and folding its upgraded content into the this year's entry-level Pop. The popular 500 Sport is dropped as a stand alone model and will now be a package, but no worries, the 2017 winds up being $1,910 less than last year. Also gone from the lime up is the 500 Turbo. The new $19,995 price of the Abarth makes last year's $19,700 Turbo superfluous.

2017 Fiat 500 Pop Rear

Absent this year are any of the European Styling updates. Rumors say that this may happen once production of the NAFTA Fiat 500 is transferred to the Tychy, Poland plant that makes the 500 for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Below sums up the each model, the new prices, standard equipment changes, and option codes and pricing.

Fiat Sales for August 2016

Fiat 500C Cabrio

Fiat sold 2,732 cars last month, nearly matching the previous month's 2,754 cars, but still off from last year's pace. Fiat sales for August 2016 were down 21 % compared to the same month last year, and year-to-date sales are down an average of 17 - 18 % compared to last year.

Last month Fiat sold a total of 1,243 500 hatchbacks, up 13 %from the month before. The Fiat 124 Spider recorded 460 sales in August, down from the 480 sold in July. A lack of manual transmissions in certain parts of the country may be playing a significant role in that.

Fiat 500 Sport

The first shipment of production 124 Spider Abarths is about to hit the shore within the coming week, so look to see the hottest version of the Fiat Spider to show up at Fiat Studios later this month. Also expect the model range to get filled out. Make sure you get to your dealer and put your deposits down, especially as there is a Labor Day Sale this weekend!

Also, speaking of new cars, 2017 will bring a major shakeup in the Fiat lineup, and we will have news of this up shortly.
