Fiat 124 Spider Abarth Announced!

Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Shown
The new Fiat 124 Spider Abarth earns its Abarth nose badge! We'll have images soon!

The 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth is now a full fledged Abarth model complete with a more powerful engine which has earned the car's its Abarth badging! The new Fiat 124 Spider Abarth now boasts 164 hp and offers unique Abarth tuning and Sport Mode selector. In fact, the new car has the same output of the 170 hp European Abarth 124, the difference is our figure is expressed in SAE numbers while European car uses the CV rating.***

The Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is essentially the European Abarth 124, complete with Abarth badging on its hood. The Elaborazione moniker has been retired. Probably the main difference between the European and North American car is the Racing Alcantara Kit (Alcantara dash trim and steering wheel) didn't make it over due to differences in US airbag specs.

Fiat 124 Spider Abarth Dash and Steering Wheel

This also means the US car will wear a Fiat badge on the steering wheel while a new US spec steering wheel complete with an Abarth logo goes through safety testing certification. This may take up to a year.**

The other difference is the European car gets an Abarth Record Monza, dual mode exhaust as standard equipment, while the US cars will get the Record Monza as an option.

The Fiat 124 Spider already delivers best-in-class horsepower and torque, but the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth bumps it even more. On top of that, the 124 Spider Abarth pricing starts at $28,159 which represents an outstanding value.

The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth with a six-speed automatic transmission has a U.S. MSRP of $29,545.*

Fiat 124 Spider News

Some news while we wait for the Fiat 124 Spider to arrive at Fiat Studios this summer. Sources inside the company confirm the Fiat 124 Spider Lusso edition will now be available with a manual transmission!

Preliminary information at the 124 Spider's introduction last November at the LA Auto Show was the base Classica edition was to have a manual transmission, and the premium Lusso model would only be available in Automatic. News of the manual transmission availability in the Lusso model will be welcome news for manual trans enthusiasts.

Clarification and a heads-up
Some folks that visited the NY Auto Show in March to check out the new 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth have mentioned the car appeared to lack the paddle shifters. We can confirm the vehicle did indeed have paddle shifters, and while they are easy to reach and use from the driver's seat, they can be difficult to see from outside the car.

Fiat 124 Spider Paddle Shifters

Also, badging on the pre-production 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth and other details were not finalized at the time of the show, so we may see some differences on the production car. Stay tuned...

This is getting exciting! We'll have details coming shortly.

Fiat 124 Spider Free Like a Bird Ad

The new Fiat 124 Spider is coming soon and promises to make you feel free like a bird... Wait, strike that and reverse it...

Fiat has a new commercial for the Fiat 124 Spider that uses the bird's eye view of a white-tailed eagle to capture the feeling of freedom when driving the open top roadster. But being a Fiat ad means there has to be a twist. Watch and see.

Filmed in the Campania region of southern Italy, Fiat worked closely with world-renowned falconer, Jacques-Olivier Travers to help create the video. Travers is from the conservation movement called FREEDOM, a group that promotes protecting wildlife and the environment throughout Europe. Visit the FREEDOM website to learn more.
