Why the Fiat 500L fits Pope Francis

Besides being a comfortable car - the subcompact Fiat 500L has the interior room of a full-sized sedan, - the 500L hails from a company known for its environmental consciousness.

Pope Francis visit to the United States became even more special for Fiat enthusiasts by the pontiffs riding all over Washington D.C. in a Fiat 500L. A humble man, Pope Francis brings his message of love, understanding and forgiveness as well as his concern for the environment to the United States. He sets an example by riding in a 500L, a car from one of the global leaders in sustainability. For the sixth year in a row, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has been included in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World.

Only the best-in-class make it on the list, as evaluated by sustainability experts RobecoSAM. The performance of 33 Automobiles sector companies were examined, but only three were chosen. FCA received a score of 88/100 versus an overall average of 60/100 for other companies in the Automotive sector. It is an accomplishment that Fiat has made the list 6 years in a row.

While many car makers bombard the airwaves with how 'green' they are, few can match Fiat's record, yet you never hear Fiat bragging. The humility of the brand fits well with the humility of the man.

Fiat 500L European Edition

Here is a list of other environmental accolades Fiat has earned over the past year:
  • Leadership in Europe for natural gas vehicles, with more than 55% market share in 2014
  • Ram 1500 EcoDiesel awarded 2015 Green Truck of the Year and Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel named 2015 Green SUV of the Year
  • Fiat 500e named Top Electric Vehicle by U.S. Northwest Automotive Press Association
  • New Fiat Uno, Palio and new Fiorino received the Conpet Seal for energy efficiency in Brazil
  • ENJOY car-sharing, launched by ENI in partnership with FCA, registered more than 325,000 subscribers and 3.9 million rentals in Italy since 2013
  • Recognition of advanced safety technologies and performance for several FCA models, including the EURO NCAP 5 stars for the Jeep Renegade and Top Safety Pick+ for the Chrysler 200
  • Further growth in R&D with €3.7 billion invested in 2014
  • €2.3 billion invested to complete and upgrade FCA's most advanced and sustainable plants - Goiana (Brazil) and Melfi (Italy) - generating more than 5,000 new jobs
  • 100% of Group industrial revenues generated by ISO 14001 certified plants and ISO 50001 certified plants accounted for 94% of total energy consumption
  • Pomigliano plant won the prestigious Lean & Green Management Award 2014 and the Verrone plant the Automotive Lean Production Award 2015
  • FCA won the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles Gold Award in the USA
  • FCA's Árvore da Vida program in Brazil completed 10 years of activities and won the AEA Environmental Award in the Social Responsibility category
  • Global Sustainable Mobility Partner for EXPO 2015, supporting the event and promoting respect for the planet's resources

Fiat 500L Trekking Edition

Additionally, FCA devised the first ever APP designed to measure the user's awareness of how they consume water, one of the planet's most precious resources.

Fiat at 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show

Fiat showed off the entire Fiat 500 lineup at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The star of the display was the New 500, which Fiat introduced last July 4th, exactly 58 years after the original Nuova 500 was introduced to the world. While we in the U.S. won't get the exterior changes the New 500 in Europe gets, we do get the new dashboard featuring the Uconnect infotainment system.

New Fiat 500 in Camouflage

The New 500 will offer an option package called 'Second Skin' that allows owners to customize the look of their car with graphics. Different patterns and combinations are offered: 'Lord' (classic tartan), 'Comics' (pop decoration) along with the new two-tone paint, 'Navy' and 'Camouflage'.

Fiat 500L Beats Edition

The market leading Fiat 500L was displayed in Beats Edition trim in addition to a Trekking model painted in Tuscany Green.

Fiat 500X at Frankfurt Motor Show

The Fiat 500X crossover, which is also enjoying brisk sales in Europe, was prominently displayed, as was Mopar with all their accessories.

Abarth at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show

Abarth 695 Biposto Record

Couldn't make it to the Frankfurt Motor show this year? No worries, here are Abarth highlights from the show.

The Abarth Biposto 695 was showcased along with a limited edition model called the 695 Biposto Record, created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Carlo Abarth's record set on the Monza circuit. In 1965, driving his '1000 Monoposto Record' prepared for Class G, 105 HP, Carlo Abarth broke the acceleration record for the quarter mile and 500 meter distance. The 695 Biposto Record commemorates his achievement.

Abarth 695 Biposto Record in Modena Yellow

The 695 Biposto Record is painted in 'Modena Yellow' and has 'Tar Cold Grey' titanium trim on the front whisker, door handles and tailgate handle. Enameled '695 Record' badges are placed on the rear quarter panels.

Abarth 695 Biposto Record Badge

Inside, features include special instrument panel graphics, carbon fiber shelled racing seats and numbered plate. As a limited edition, there will only be 133 695 Biposto Records made, the number corresponding to the number of records the Abarth brand holds.

Abarth 595 Yamaha Factory Racing Edition

A special version of the Abarth 595 was also displayed. Called the 595 Yamaha Factory Racing Edition, the model pays homage to the partnership between Abarth and Team Movistar Yamaha for the 2015 and 2016 racing seasons. Abarth is the Official Sponsor and Official Car Supplier of the FIM MotoGP Championship team with official riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo.

Abarth 595 Yamaha Edition in White Race

The Abarth 595 Yamaha Factory Racing Edition will be available in seven colors: White Race, Red Workshop, Campovolo Grey, Track Grey, Record Grey, Blue Podium, and Black Scorpion.

The 'Yamaha Factory Racing' logo on the tailgate commemorates the record six championships won since 2004 making it one of the most successful teams in the world.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Press Conference at Frankfurt Motor Show

Alfa Romeo showed off its newest creation at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this week. The new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is a technological tour de force that showcases what the legendary car maker is all about. The car becoming an extension of the driver's body and soul is what Alfa Romeo does best, and the new Giulia Quadrifoglio takes the fusion of man and machine to the next level with its stunning performance capabilities.

You must watch the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio full press conference at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show!

The Giulia was developed by a team of elite engineers hand picked from all over FCA and overseen by two senior heads from Ferrari. And it shows. The twin-turbo V6 engine is derived from Ferrari's twin-turbo V8, but heavily re-engineered for the Giulia and puts out 510 HP and 442 lbs ft of torque. The results are 0-62 mph blasts in 3.9 seconds. However, the Giulia is more than just brutal acceleration. Like all great Alfa Romeos it is about balanced performance, so along with the massive power comes equally impressive handling and stopping.

Advanced engineering brings about patented suspension systems front and rear, torque vectoring rear differential for stability and the most direct steering on the market. The robust chassis boasts ample use of ultralight materials, such as carbon fiber, composite materials, aluminum, and magnesium, allowing a dry weight of just 3373 lbs.

Carbon fiber is used for the roof and hood as well as the driveshaft and seat frames. Factoring in the massive horsepower, the Giulia Quadrifoglio achieves a power to weight ratio of just 6.58 lbs per HP, the best in its segment. The gorgeous shell that wraps the body is extremely aerodynamic, the base Giulia records a drag coefficient of just .25 Cd - the best of its competitors

Particular care has been taken to assure high-speed stability and an automatically adjustable carbon fiber front air splitter contributes to the car's negative downforce measurement of 220 lbs at 186 mph. This is needed because the Giulia Quadrifoglio has a top speed of 191 mph.

Reigning in all this speed is a brake system that is worthy of the Giulia's supercar power and handling. For the first time in production, an Integrated Brake System is used which combines stability control and a traditional brake servo for instantaneous brake response, and record-breaking stopping distances without the typical ABS pedal vibration. When teamed with carbon ceramic brake discs, the Giulia QV can stop from 100 km/h to 0 in less than 32 meters (105 feet).

The electronic stability control is tuned to improve the driving experience and be a performance enhancer and not a fault corrector. The Torque Vectoring rear differential uses a double-clutch to control the torque delivery to each wheel independently, improving traction in low grip conditions without the utilization of the brake system or cutting engine power.

The proof that this all works is the announcement that the Giulia Quadrifoglio has set a world record lap time on Germany's Nurburgring race track. The Giulia was the fastest sedan ever with a time of 7 minutes 39 seconds.

Prices in Italy for the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio will start at 79,000 Euros (72,000 in Germany) with a special lightweight launch edition fitting carbon ceramic brake discs, ultra-light carbon fiber sport seats and many more exclusive premium features for 95,000 Euros (90,000 in Germany). Expect to see the Alfa Giulia in US Alfa Romeo showrooms sometime next year.

How to Update the Fiat 500X Uconnect 6.5 System

The first step is to check your Uconnect software release number. If the software is **15.21.37** or higher, your car has the new update you are set and don't need to do anything. If not, keep going:

How to check the software version on you Fiat 500X Uconnect 6.5 System:

Fiat 500X Uconnect 6.5 Menu Button

Start the vehicle and turn on the radio. Press “Menu/Settings” button (hard key) on the radio above the tuning knob on the right.

Navigating settings menu

Toggle down until you see the “System Information” using the touch screen soft key arrow.

Fiat 500X Uconnect System Information Button

Check what Software Version is on the radio.

Fiat 500X Uconnect System Information Screen

Is the software at **15.21.37** or higher? If Yes, this bulletin has been completed and nothing needs to be done.  My car had software version 15.20.35 and needed the reflash.

Next, go to Uconnect's website called Driveconnect and enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) and see if update is applicable to your 500X.

Uconnect Software Update Screen

If it is, the site will walk you through how to download the update, which involves unzipping a file onto a 4GB USB memory stick and then plugging it into your car's USB port.

Flash drive loaded with software update

A couple of notes: it is important that this USB flash drive is totally empty and it is formatted in NTFS. Remember,  you need to extract the file onto the flash drive and not just send the zip file there. There is a download manager on the site called Akamai NetSession that can help optimize the speed of the download, but I skipped that and just downloaded the zip file, which is 471 MB. When unzipped, the new software file labeled "swdl" is about 796 MB. The flash drive I used was technically 3.7 GB.

Fiat 500X center armrest USB port

Turn your radio on and remove any other USB devices from both USB ports in the car. Insert your flash drive into the USB port located in the center armrest compartment. Then follow the prompts on the radio. This update may take take 20 minutes so it is recommended that the car be running. Only do this outside as carbon monoxide is deadly and can sneak up on you inside a garage even with a door open.

CAUTION: The screen may display “No Files On USB” Do Not remove the USB flash drive. This message should only last about a minute.

FIat 500X Uconnect Software Update Screen

The first prompt will display both your old and the new software version and ask do you want to upgrade software to 15.21.37. Hit yes, and then sit back for a while and let the update do its thing.

FIat 500X Uconnect Software Updating

The screen may go blank a few times, plus cycle through a few splash screens.

Verifying Software Updated

Wait until the message asking if you want to upgrade the software to 15.21.37 appears again and this time select No. It is then safe to remove the USB stick and time to enjoy the enhanced functionality of your Uconnect system!

Here is an example of the improved map graphics and details:

Previous version of the navigation map.

The new software update brings much more detail.

This is provided for informational purposes only. You should always contact your dealer for up to date information and to answer any questions. The dealer will be able to tell you if this TSB is applicable to your car.

Biggest news, though is the changeover to Chrysler's Uconnect infotainment system that combines an integrated CD player with Bluetooth phone support and navigation. This modern system is a nice update over the previous system that used an add-on TomTom device that sat atop of the dashboard.

2016 Fiat 500 USA Model Changes

2016 Fiat 500 Sport in Spitfire Orange
2016 Fiat 500 Sport in Spitfire Orange

The 2016 model year brings some changes to the Fiat 500 model lineup. Exterior wise, North American 2016 Fiat 500 hatch and Cabrio models forgo the changes made to European 500s and are identical to 2015 cars, except for a few new colors and the availability of new wheels. A new model called the Easy has been added to the lineup and slots in between the Pop and the Sport model. The biggest change is Chrysler's Uconnect infotainment system replaces the old add-on TomTom setup used in previous years and has been added to all 2016 Fiat 500 models above the Pop level.

2016 Fiat 500 Uconnect 5.0

Chrysler's award-winning Uconnect 5.0 system features a 5-inch touchscreen and integrated CD player.
