Fiat 500 Abarth Automatic Hits Production!

2015 Fiat 500 Abarth with Automatic Transmission

*6/26 - now updated with EPA mpg figures!

Production of the 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth equipped with an automnatic transmission has just started today at the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico. The availability of an automatic transmission will help boost sales of the Fiat 500 Abarth, which is already enjoying a 16 percent increase over last year. Studies show very few Americans buy manual transmission cars - only about 5 -7 percent according to Automotive News - so having an automatic transmission option makes sense.

The Aisin AW automatic transmission being used in the 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth is a traditional torque converter type, beefed up for high performance use with more clutch plates and a more robust heat treatment to allow for higher torque capacity. Special care has been taken to ensure the 500 Abarth driving experience is retained. When sport mode is selected, more aggressive transmission settings are activated such as throttle-blipping, rev-matching downshifts along with gears being held longer when accelerating out of corners and when getting off the gas. The engine has a fuel-cut off during spirited upshifts, making for the Abarth's signature exhaust pop and the transmission downshifts when getting hard on the brakes to assist stopping performance and to ensure the car is in an appropriate gear to accelerate again.  Transmission upshifts take 150-200 milliseconds at full-throttle!

Fiat 500 Abarth Auto Trans Shifter

Control is by a console mounted gear shift, and the 6-speed transmission can be shifted manually if desired. The paddle shifters used on the European Abarth 500 could not be fitted as it would have required the elimination of the cruise control, a feature that is a prerequisite in the North American market.

As I have mentioned in previous postings, the use of an automatic transmission opens the possibility of higher engine outputs and the engine of the 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth when teamed with an automatic transmission is now rated at 183 ft.-lb. of torque - that is up from the 170 ft.-lb. the manual transmission Abarth's have. Horsepower is 157, just down slightly from the 160 hp in manual cars.

The automatic transmission equipped Fiat 500 Abarth is rated by the EPA to get 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for a combined average of 27 mpg. This is down slightly from the manual transmission Abarth's 28 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined average figures.

Fans of the Fiat 500T Turbo will be happy to know that the 500T will also receive the same reinforced heavy duty automatic transmission option, just calibrated differently. Look to see 2015 Fiat 500 models in Fiat Studios later this summer.

Alfa 4C US and Euro Chassis Differences

Alfa Romeo 4C US Launch Edition

In creating the Alfa Romeo 4C, the company wanted to create an affordable exotic car and spiritual successor of the legendary 33 Stradale. To achieve a very high level of performance yet stay within the targeted price range, Alfa Romeo turned to the use of lightweight materials which were previously used only for military and aerospace applications. This keeps the weight of the car low and subsequently allowed the use of a lightweight and powerful four cylinder engine that guarantees excellent performance due to a high power to weight ratio. The fact that the engine is an off the shelf unit helps keep the car within the required budget.

Alfa Romeo 4C Chassis

The net results are a car that has a dry weight of approximately 1973 lbs in Europe and has a power to weight ratio of 8.22 lb/hp. In the US, the Alfa Romeo 4C will gain some 342 lbs, due to structural and equipment changes. Below we'll take a look at the chassis of the Alfa Romeo 4C along with some of the differences between the US and European model, with the help of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Alfa Romeo.

Alfa Romeo 4C Chassis Rear View

Applications of composite materials for manufacturing vehicle chassis have so far been limited to supercars costing at least $200,000, or vehicles with very limited road use.

Alfa Romeo 4C Chassis Under View

The Alfa Romeo 4C is the first sports car made with extensive use of composite materials like carbon fiber and offered at the price of a mid-sized luxury sedan.

The engineers and designers of the Alfa Romeo 4C had to face many challenges:
• High cost of materials
• Difficulty mass production application
• High design complexity

Achieving these goals allowed the engineers to obtain two main advantages: a high level of integration between components (a single complex carbon part instead of many welded or bolted steel parts) and a considerable reduction of weight.

To understand the benefits provided by the use of carbon it is useful to compare this material with "conventional" alloys and metals.

CFRP Breaking Strength Chart

The 4C is not only the first sports car in its class to offer a carbon fiber chassis, it also spearheaded improved production methods of a wide range of components that had been difficult to apply to mass production, due to the conventional use of pressed steel.

Alfa Romeo 4C Carbon Tub

The Alfa Romeo 4C chassis is dominated by the central carbon fiber "tub", which houses the passenger compartment and includes the attachment points of the front suspension.

Alfa Romeo 4C Roll-Bar

A strong high resistance steel roll-bar is positioned behind the passengers. This prevents passenger compartment deformation in the event of roll over. There are aluminium structures at both ends that protect against impacts, the rear aluminium structure creates a "cradle" for the engine and transmission, and includes the attachments of the rear suspension. These structures feature controlled collapsibility for safety.

Alfa Romeo 4C Carbon Fiber Tub

To comply with US crash standards, both the front and rear aluminium structures and the aluminium tub have significant differences on the versions sold in the US market compared to the European versions.

The differences in the European and US versions of the front chassis are indicated below. (front view)

Alfa Romeo 4C US Front Chassis

There are also differences between the European and US versions of the aluminium front chassis. The various colors indicate
the different characteristics of the US and European chassis.
• Parts in red: specific parts added.
• Parts in blue: parts in common but different thickness.
• Parts in yellow: same volume but different thickness.
• Parts in grey: parts in common

The following, on the other hand, are the differences relating to the European and US versions of the rear chassis.

Fiat Endless Fun Ad Campaign

Fiat's Endless Fun Campaign

Fiat debuted a new series of TV and online ads this week. The new Fiat ad campaign is called ‘Endless Fun’ and features 15 second animated GIFS that highlight specific attributes of particular Fiat models.

According to Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, Chrysler Group LLC and Fiat Group Automobiles Head of Fiat Brand, “The ‘Endless Fun’ campaign is one that only Fiat could do. This is how marketing and pop culture meet. Airing these GIFs as commercials, while a bit irreverent and unexpected, captures the uniqueness of the Fiat brand and the power social media plays upon it.”

“Open to Whatever,” shows the unexpected fun that can be had with the top down of Fiat 500 Cabrio, as someone drops into the vehicle through its open roof.

“More Space, More Fun” has the roomy 4-door Fiat 500L orbited by “planets” and its doors open to reveal the possibilities that come with that space.

The Fiat 500 Turbo “Unleash the Horses” spot highlights the performance it has under the hood by having animated horses gallop out of the engine.

The “Deal With It“ commercial reflects the overall fun of owning a Fiat 500.

The “Endless Fun” campaign can be viewed on the Fiat brand’s Tumblr page, and on the brand’s YouTube site. Fans can also submit their own GIFS to Fiat's Tumblr page using the hashtag #MyFIATUSA to have them featured on the site.

From June 3 through November 1, 2014, contestants who submit photos or "selfies" (self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone) will have a chance to win weekly Prize Packs of Jones Soda and FIAT merchandise. Participants in the U.S. and Canada can enter to win by submitting their qualifying photos using the hashtag #JonesinforaFiat500 through Jones Soda Co.'s Official Website, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages. Submissions will be judged based on the quality and creativity of the photos.

In addition to the photo contest, the companies partnered on a variety of other successful campaigns in California throughout 2013, including a presence at the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing, the FIAT dealership program and social media initiatives. Jones and the FIAT brand's first joint photo contest ran in coordination with both brands launching new products in California in 2013.

 Jones Stripped

"When FIAT and Jones got together last year, we realized that it was the start of a great collaboration and after the success of last year's events, we definitely want to expand our partnership. We couldn't have asked for a better, like-minded brand partner," says Jennifer Cue, CEO, Jones Soda.

"Our partnership last summer with Natural Jones Soda was a great success," said Jason Stoicevich, Head of FIAT Brand North America. "By utilizing the social media space to engage consumers through photography, we have been able to showcase a different side of our brand as it was captured by the eyes of the contestants. We look forward to seeing the fantastic photos to be posted this year and finding out who will drive home a brand new 2014 Fiat 500."

The FIAT dealership sampling program is another exciting joint effort where buyers of FIAT vehicles at select dealerships in the U.S. can receive a set of Limited Edition FIAT labeled Jones Stripped bottles, the newest product in Jones natural soda line. Both companies will also be collaborating on a range of other social media initiatives.

Fiat 500 Sales for May 2014

Fiat 500L Trekking

Fiat brand sales for May set a record. Fiat sold a total of 4,771 cars last month, the most ever since the brand came back to the US market in 2011. May sales were up 18 percent compared to the same month a year ago, the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. So far this year Fiat has sold a total of 20,494 cars compared to 17,562 for the same period last year, a 17 percent increase.

Sales of the Fiat 500L also set a record. Fiat sold a total of 1,434 cars in May, the best month for the 500L since its introduction last June. Sales have no doubt been helped by an aggressive ad campaign featuring Godzilla and the fact that the Fiat 500L is a phenomenally roomy and versatile car.

Fiat 500 Abarth

The Fiat 500 hatchback and Cabrio models also had a good month, with sales up 10 percent over last month. The Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio did particularly well with sales up 66 percent over last year. The Fiat 500T Turbo and 500E all electric vehicle all recorded sales gains for the month.

Since January 2013, sales of Fiat 500 hatchback and Cabrio models have averaged around 2,900 units per month, so May's 3,337 figure is a definite plus. Below is a look at how sales of the Fiat 500 stack up against its popular competitors:
  • Fiat 500 May sales = 3,337, year-to-date total = 14,851
  • VW Golf May sales = 1,793, year-to-date total = 8,941
  • MINI Cooper May sales = 3,244, year-to-date total = 9,366
  • Hyundai Veloster May sales = 2,971 year-to-date total = 12,416
  • Toyota Yaris May sales = 1,616, year-to-date total = 7,210

May Recap
It was a busy month in the Fiat world. Biggest news was Fiat Chrysler Automobiles unveiled their five year business plan that outlined new products. Alfa Romeo fans were excited to hear that Fiat is spending upwards of 7 billion dollars on new products including engines over 500 HP and a high performance Alfa Romeo 4C Quadrifoglio to debut next year.

Fiat 500X Design Study

Fiat announced a new specialty car arriving at the end of 2015, probably the highly anticipated sportscar based on the next generation Mazda Miata. Undisguised images of the Fiat 500X crossover utility were also revealed. The Fiat 500X is a sporty crossover that is expected in Fiat showrooms early next year. Absent from the plan was talk of a replacement Fiat 500 hatchback, but sources say expect many enhancements and refinements to make their way into a refreshed Fiat 500 coming in the future.

Godzilla versus Fiat 500L

Fiat turned up the marketing on the Fiat 500L with a huge TV ad campaign featuring the star of the blockbuster hit Godzilla. The eye-catching ad features the creature preferring to munch exclusively on Fiats to satisfy his culinary desire, but when he gets to the large Fiat 500L, he bites off more than he can chew. The ad plays up the Fiat 500L tagline "Unbelievably Big" in a fun way. Follow the link to watch the video:

For Fiat 500E owners, Fiat announced last month a voluntary recall to replace the car's power inverter module. There is also a major software update download available at dealers that enhances the operation of many features of the all electric 500E.
